Music Gourmets Presents 60 Years of Great Music - 2009

Welcome to the next year in our "Great Music" series - 2009

Here's the rules:

Each week, we'll introduce a new year from 1957 through 2017. Each member selects an album released in that year with a few lines (or more) on why you picked it/enjoy it. Your selection does not have to be the most important release or the most admired release of that year (though it certainly can be), simply an album that grabs you and that you really love.

However, once an album is selected by a member, you must choose a different album.

Together we will compile quite the canon of "Great Music" and, who knows, maybe inspire each other to check out some new artists (or to revisit old forgotten classics).

This week - the albums of 2009

Weird. I own or have heard 66 albums from 2009. However, of the top 150 albums listed on RYM, I've heard only 3 and own only 2. <shrug>
In a 4-way tight photo finish, my pick is ....

Maxwell - BLACKsummers'night

Another good year.
Baroness - Blue Record

Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below

As I mentioned in the previous thread, I joined the MG in 2009 so wound up adopting a bunch of albums from members that I would never had checked out otherwise. As such, I have like five albums I could have easily chosen here that I really enjoy - Florence + The Machine, Fun, The Avett Brothers all had great albums this year. I was tempted to pick the primarily instrumental spaghetti Western influenced Guano Padano debut which has a great vibe.

Gonna go with Edward Sharpe though which isn't a complete album but has a great first side and also has a trippy, mellow, psych-folk vibe to it. The Magnetic Zeros are like a bunch of 60s peace-freak hippies that stepped out of a time machine and made music. Some nice hits with "Home" (which still gets radio play) and "Janglin'" but some songs with a darker vibe too. On another day, could easily have chosen another album but hey! it's Monday! ;)

I posted this thread late - last Tuesday - will hold off a little bit on 2010's thread but peruse 2009 and get yer picks in :)
