Random Food Thoughts

I have a friend who has complete, total discipline when it comes to food. Does not eat out EVER, only eats regular food he prepares himself. Does not eat any junk food outside of popsicles and Cheez-It. The man is a freak of nature.

While here I am craving pizza, subs and Chinese food alternately.

Reading about the Automats makes it sound like a slice of alternate history from another dimension.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! That article got it waaay wrong. The first Automats were in Philadelphia. The first Horn & Hardart was around the corner from my first out of college job, and we used to go get lunch there every so often from the Automat. There is a historical plaque out front. AND....my grandfather used to get lunch there almost every day when he owned a shoe repair shop a block away in the 1940s.

The tastiest fries come from a potato variety called Bintjes. I'd describe it as the texture of Russets but with the flavor and creaminess of Yukon Golds. It's the most popular potato in Europe, and if you've had "pommis" in Switzerland, you'll know why. A number of years ago, we smuggled some baby Bintjes back with us and planted them in the garden. So damned good! We managed to find a potato supplier in Maine that sold "Bintje" seed potatoes for planting. Unfortunately, they were not the real thing.

They are supposedly on Amazon, though the reviews for this seller are very mixed.
