Random Food Thoughts

My sister-in-law bought a bunch of Papa John's pizzas for a birthday party for her daughter a few years ago. I had one slice and it was vile.
I've never been to any of the other places, although I now a few people who say Chik-fil-a sandwiches are good. Well, there aren't any around here (that I know of) so I wouldn't know.

I might or might not have had almost half of these already. :nickyboy:
I've had three. Grilled ribs, grilled chicken and well, only one hamburger, so technically that doesn't count. I guess I just eat too healthy.

Brings up a question for me though. I grew up in Northern California, where fruit was plentiful and delicious and it was often our dessert in the summertime. Why do people put salt on watermelon? That to me is like saying "Oh, you don't want to drink that nice cool filtered water from the refrigerator. Here, have some sea water. That's what you rally want!"

Ooooh! Try it. Not too much, just a light sprinkle. The salt amplifying the sweetness of the watermelon. Have you ever had watermelon-feta-mint salad (just toss with some olive oil). The flavors of each element explode in combination.

One I haven't done yet is to grill thick slabs of watermelon on the grill, after salt and peppering it. Supposedly (supposedly), it becomes firm and almost meat-like. Hmmmm....really?

I admit I've never tried the sprinkle of salt on watermelon. You know what you're talking about with food, so I'll give it a go once this summer.

As to grilled watermelon, I've heard of it but never tried it. I have a dear friend who's really good in her kitchen and likes to grill as well. I may just bring over a watermelon and casually mention this grilling thing to see if it gets traction.

Grilling fruit is fantastic. I usually sprinkle pieces (split banana, halved peaches, oranges, pineapple, etc.) with some salt and a little bit of brown sugar and then grill until nicely charred. It intensifies the sweetness and fruit's flavor. Serve with a sprinkle of bourbon or brandy and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Fantastic summer dessert!
As for grilling watermelon, I think it is supposed to be a meat substitute. I don't think grilled watermelon and ice cream would be good. But then again, I've never had it, so I could be wrong.
