I've been hearing a lot lately about Beyond Meat-brand "Beast" veggie burgers. They are supposed to be the closest thing to a real beef burger, and not a crumbly patty of grains and beans. The stores around here that carry them can't keep them in stock due to demand and the producer not being able to keep up production to meet demand.
Well, we got a box of them the other day and tried them last night. $6 for a box of two seems a bit steep for me. Any way, I opened the package to grill them and sure enough, they do look like a formed, beef patty. Put them on the grill, frozen, 3 minutes a side. Since they don't have beef fat, they don't shrink up. That's a plus. They also were rather dry looking at first, but around the 2 minute mark, a bunch of oil of some sort came out and they really started to char due to flare up on the grill.
One thing I must say is that they really had a smell of canned, wet dog food while cooking. Bleh. But I also must say that they were actually quite delicious to eat. The texture was like a beef burger, the taste wasn't all grains and beans. I don't think they will replace my regular meat burger, but I think they are a decent substitute every so often. Nickyboy recommended, if you can find them.
