I no longer know what's true or not.

From teh interwebs:

In the UK it's pear...
"Per flavor scientist Nadia Bernstein, this same compound that we know as banana flavor was first used in England as an artificial pear flavor. It was recognizable to palates there as the Jargonelle pear. However, chemical catalogs from the US in the 1850s advertise the same compound as both ‘pear oil’ and ‘banana essence.’ "

  • Also the "banana essence" cannot be true in the US because bananas didn't come to the US until the 1870s. That's why they could pass off pear as banana in the US because no one here knew what bananas tastes like anyway.

Interesting. I would have thought the sweet banana was older than that. I learned something new today!

According to the NYT,

“On his private train, Kim Jong-un can order any dish of Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and French cuisine. The North Koreans made sure that live lobsters were shipped to the train to provide Mr. Kim with fresh delicacies during the tedium of crossing Siberia. “

And all the Diet Coke he wants to wash them down.
Many years ago when we were dating, I took Mrs. (then Ms.) Ojai out for sushi. The server offered us drinks and put special emphasis on one I wasn’t familiar with. Trying to look suave, I ordered a “Daiko”, with predictable results. She sipped her sake and said nothing.

For some reason, my future bride (who had and still has suavite to burn) went out with me again. :worm:
