Random Music Thoughts

Ah, like the return annually of the swallows to Capistrano, it's time for Zeeba's annual post of the latest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees which is always met with indifference ;)

Initial list of nominees announced today:
The nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2019 are in, and the list includes Radiohead, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, Rage Against the Machine, the Cure, Devo, Janet Jackson, Kraftwerk, LL Cool J, Roxy Music, Todd Rundgren, John Prine, MC5, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan and the Zombies. The top vote-getters will be announced in December and inducted March 29th, 2019 at a ceremony at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center

Some interesting groups many of which will be passed over
Radiohead and Rage Against The Machine make their second appearance after being passed over last year.

Shocked in a good way about Roxy Music, The Zombies and John Prine being up there. Can I see any of these making the final cut - not really. Ditto Devo and Kraftwerk, certainly influential group

As for the hip hop/R&B artists that could make it based on crossover success - LL Cool J definitely with make it over Janet and Rufus/Chaka. Everyone LOVES LL Cool J - he could host the ceremony.

Hey I like Stevie Nicks but c'mon - she's been inducted as part of Fleetwood Mac. Has one really good album (Bella Donna) and the rest are pleasant. 4-5 singles does not make an inductee (except in Del Shannon's case ;)) I know others will disagree but ditto Todd Rundgren - two really good albums (and I think personally that Something/Anything? has a lot of filler )

If I had to guess the final five (they usually take five) based on popularity/probability (not necessarily based on worth):
LL Cool J (his fifth nomination's the charm)
Def Leppard
Rage Against The Machine

After that it gets tough but given the slate - I think Radiohead gets in this year.

I would love to see Roxy Music or The Zombies as the fifth inductee (former more deserving than latter) and Kraftwerk and The Cure are more deserving, but they might go with Janet Jackson for fifth choice - big show, popular, racial diversity

Stay tuned...

From a Quincy Jones interview. (Apologies if already familiar, I missed it the first time around.)

What were your first impressions of the Beatles?

That they were the worst musicians in the world. They were no-playing motherfuckers. Paul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Don’t even talk about it. I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn’t get it. We said, “Mate, why don’t you get some lager and lime, some shepherd’s pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.” So he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. Ronnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up. Ringo comes back and says, “George, can you play it back for me one more time?” So George did, and Ringo says, “That didn’t sound so bad.” And I said, “Yeah, motherfucker because it ain’t you.” Great guy, though.

In the last two months I've spent $50 on Bandcamp albums. Granted, they were in FLAC, but that still seems like a lot for 1s & 0s.
It depends on what you get and how much you like it. I try to opt for a physical copy, but this is not generally an option on Bandcamp.

I'm trying not to buy too many physical objects anymore, as it's just more stuff for me to lose in a hurricane. I considered getting a backup Massdrop HD6xx (same as my HD650, different paint job), but I ultimately decided against it. How am I going to take all this shit with me if I have to evacuate?

Currently testing out Qobuz (somebody gave me a preview code) lossless streaming. The sound quality is excellent, but their music library is lacking for the kind of music I listen to. And some of the lo-fi/badly recorded stuff I listen to sounds no better in lossless than it does in 320kbps Spotify.

Well recorded stuff does sound better though, just like my local FLACs.
