Random Music Thoughts

This could have gone in the audiophile thread, but commenters keep mentioning the placement of his left thumb directly on the playing surface of the record, which means fingers are touching the other side.

Why does the guy's hair, the way they're both dressed, and the furniture look like circa 1950s or early 60s?

Because he's really:

Perhaps, he furnishes his home with mid-20th century furniture found at Goodwill. Maybe, he cannot feed his own family.

She's not even sure why she bothers to call him "darling" any more.

That took a dark turn. I probably need to have dinner.

From the Washington Post:

"Even those who have noted these prejudices could be excused for not noticing the presence of such [racist] tropes in another key element of every Star Wars film: John Williams’s iconic musical score. Williams’s music associates the “good guys” with the grand orchestral style of the European Romantics (think of the beautifully hummable melodies for Luke, Leia and Rey), while the themes for the “bad guys” are expressed in the vocabulary of Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern music."

Discuss.

Now, for something completely indifferent....

But after participating in The Cure’s induction last year, Reznor saw things differently. “It ended up being a pretty cool experience and I thought, ‘Alright, it doesn’t feel as bullshit as I kind of snarkily dismissed it as.’ I don’t have any problem admitting I’ve changed my opinion about something,” the frontman explained.
Good for him.
He also wrote the score for Birdbox, but apparently that was “a fucking waste of time.”
Behold the field... :meh:

I'm doing some copying jobs to separate my MP3 files from my FLAC files, which up until now have all lived in the same folder, in artist and album subfolders. Been wanting to do it for years, but the task just seemed too daunting. Finally it came to me that using Carbon Copy Cloner (a Mac app I use to make local backups) with some filters, I could make copies of both all the MP3s and FLACs separately and then copy the two different folders back onto my music drive. I've been at it since this afternoon. I will finish the FLACs tonight but then I'll need to finish the MP3s tomorrow. All of this is backed up elsewhere, but it's still pretty stressful to alter my library this way.

Well, I did it! I finished bifurcating my music library into MP3 and FLAC folders. I was careful to keep the MP3 folder with the same name the one music folder had before, and the Music app (formerly iTunes) on macOS accepted the newly reconstituted MP3 folder without a hitch.

A lot could have gone wrong, and it didn't!

Listening to "Kathy's Waltz" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Between 1:01-1:07, I found myself singing "All My Loving" by the Beatles. Hmm. I wonder why. :nunja:

It does have that same eight or nine chords the same as All My Loving. Interesting catch.

Not the same thing, but...

I once had a jazz buff call me into a room and listen to a song. Then he played a different song from a different artist. Both had the exact same saxophone in the background. It was like some engineer had saved the saxophone track and re-used it on another album.

Outside of Pere Ubu, you've collaborated with wide a variety of musicians in rock and avant-garde circles. What was one of the most formative collaborations for you?
My favorites have been with Richard Thompson and Linda Thompson, and I really enjoyed working with Van Dyke Parks on a couple of live things. In fact, the two memories I call to mind in those dark hours of the soul at 3:00am are a) Linda Thompson sitting at a piano at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and she said to me, "I wish I could sing like you do." Which I'm sure had nothing to do with the quality of my voice, but she thinks I'm fearless. The next one was at the same place. Van Dyke parks introduced me to Brian Wilson saying, "I'd like you to meet the other American genius."

Excellent interview with David Thomas of Pere Ubu.

Since iTunes is being phased out, what other options do I have to play my music I have saved there now? I have a lot of music there that I don't have on disc or record, and I don't want to lose it. Is there another player option I can move everything to in order to keep playing it on my laptop?

As far as I know, iTunes continues on Windows. Unless you've heard something more recent.

Apple will always have something available so you can sync music and video to an iPhone or iPad.

As for alternatives, Media Monkey is a good free one on Windows. I used J. River Media Center on PC for years, but that is a paid program. It is also very complex.
