Random Music Thoughts

Paraphrasing from something on social media ...
"When I discover a new musical act I like I obsessively binge every album he/she/they ever released. I'm so proud of myself for putting in the work to appreciate music."
Every response: "You go!!" "Me too!!!"

Me: It's so cute to see a new generation think they are creating a new way to enjoy music, just like I thought I was doing when I started doing the same thing forty years ago.

Hah. I was doing this 50+ years ago.

Wait... :axo:

Listening (and relistening) to more 70s Rock music lately. Gotta say, after listening to Molly Hatchett/Allman Brothers/Skynyrd etc (and other 60s-70s American R&R) I kind of cringe at how much props and respect I gave the Rolling Stones in the past. They basically just copied the Blues/Soul-influenced Southern Rock music of the time and put out their version of it. Not bad. Very good in fact. But still a facsimile. Which is no crime because all musical acts try to copy the music that came before them that they respect and like. I'm more cringing at the fact I may have thought the Stones were more ... unique than they actually were.

On a similar vein, I recent read "How To Hide An Empire" by historian Daniel Immerwahr, about how America's empire spread across the world. In a part of it that covers England in the 50s-60s, he highlights an American air force base in England that significantly changed the culture and economic fortunes of one specific city and how that infusion of American culture was critical to the birth of The Beatles, of whom one or more of its future members grew up nearby the base. And of course The Beatles influenced every British invasion band that came after them.

I'm jus' musing, is all.
