Television and Internet Shows

The wife and I watch that one too.
We just started with "The Bridge". Worth getting on Netflix discs. It is a Scandinavian crime series. The first episode takes place on the Oeresund Bridge, which connects Sweden and Denmark, where a body is found right on the border line. We have the rest of Season 1 in queue.

Wait, Netflix still SENDS DVDs IN THE MAIL???!!!???

AT&T's big plan for HBO is to fill it with more random trash like Netflix.

There's some great stuff on Netflix but there's so much, it's tough to keep up. I'm on Netflix all the time to watch various films or shows like Arrested Development, GLOW, Bojack Horseman, etc. Then my wife or a friend will tell me about a movie or show there that I've never even seen advertised.

The old guy in me kind of longs for the days when there wasn't so much available - it seems like one's always missing out on something.

Bird Box is but one example. A week into all the publicity about it, and I still had no idea what it was, and honestly I had little interest in watching it. I put it in that box labled "overhyped stuff that I'm not going to waste my time with." When I finally got around to watching it, I liked it a lot.

Netflix (and other alt-broadcast producers) has so many shows/movies out there, part of my brain insists they can't all be good. And that's true, there is probably a lot of slush in that mix. But my brain goes overboard and lends to the opinion that everything is midling or just plain bad. Yet whenever I watch something, it turns out to be, at the least, good, and usually very very good.

I think I'm holding on to my low opinion of these shows because it helps me not feel so bad for missing out on so much great fare. It was bad enough 25 years ago to listen friends tell me what I was missing with a network show. It was bad enough to hear a friend tell me a decade ago what I was missing with HBO shows. I can't absorb the fact that there are literally dozens of shows each season that I'm missing that I know I would like.

I'm not currently watching Game of Thrones, but I might choose to someday.

I'm glad that I have a bad memory, because my browsing of the internet shows that "journalists" are not even trying to avoid writing spoilers anymore.

After the second or third season, a friend who had been encouraging me to watch it broke down and gave me the first two seasons on DVD. He knew it was something I would have liked to watch when we were single men hanging out -- unfortunately, at the time, I was knee-deep in three young kids and had no time for tv. I still have those DVDs. I have not yet watched a single episode.

But I want to.

Hap & Leonard

I love the book series and when I heard of a television adaption, I wasn't sure how it would work. I remember loving Spenser For Hire on television ... then years later I discovered the books and the television series seemed watered down. H&L is about two ne'er-do-well buddies, a perpetually down on his love life luck and financial life luck white guy, and a love-lorn, sarcastic, gay black Vietnam vet, who find all kinds of trouble trying to live their lives as best friends and right wrongs in east Texas.

What makes the Hap & Leonard television series work is that it is cable tv, so all most of the NSFW stuff is intact. I laughed, cringed, and teared up watching this, just like I do with most of the books. I watched the second season (each is only 6 episodes) and am halfway through the third season. I gotta find the first season and watch that too. This is about as perfect an adaptation I've seen.

Yeah, you're right, that's the actor who played Omar on The Wire.

ETA: Watching this made me order one of the books I haven't read yet in the series. I'm ready for one.

There is just too much good TV to watch these days - I haven't been able to get to tons of stuff on my list (Watchman, Chernobyl, Jack Ryan). Gonna be more goal-directed in the New Year

Comedies have been easier to watch - often shorted and an easier sell to sit down and watch with my wife
Getting through latest season of Mrs. Maisel now

Just finished Russian Doll - worth checking out if you haven't. A darkly humorous Groundhog Day involving a woman trying to figure out why she keeps dying and coming back...and she's pissed it's happening. Natasha Lyonne (from Orange is the New Black...who I just found out has been in a 4 yr relationship with Fred Armisen) is outstanding

What?! I missed the last season of Letterkenny...sigh

And did finish season 2 of The Kominsky Method - Alan Arkin is, as always, hilarious. Sadly the "getting older sucks" schtik is starting to hit a little too close to home...and at only 51(!)

Plus! My first Christmas Present of sorts was to find that a bunch of classic comedies are now on Hulu - Bob Newhart Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Wings, MASH...family and I each year, thanks to streaming, go back and watch Christmas episodes of old shows, many of which are dated, but some (MASH, Frasier for example) are pretty timeless

Anyone else enjoying some good shows!

Chernobyl - Don't think I was aware of this. It looks great and right up my alley. Unfortunately, I don't subscribe to HBO. Fortunately, it's already out on DVD and my library has a few copies. There is a small waiting list, but it won't be long. Can't wait!

Watchmen - I remember when the original comic book series came out, and I was on the fence about whether to buy it or not. For one, self-contained maxi-series featuring new characters set in a non-DC and non-Marvel universe, was a sort of new thing in 1986. For a lot of collectors, myself included, there were more regular comics than I could afford and the natural tendency was, if I had more money, to buy comics set in one of the two universes I already knew and loved. Second, the price of this "premium" comic printed on "premium" paper with "premium" color ink, was about twice that of regular comics. So not only would I have to sacrafice an X-Men spinoff comic to purchase this, but I'd also have to not buy a Batman comic. But thankfully I convinced myself to buy in - and it was a great ride. This looks like a great series but ... it's HBO. Drat.

Jack Ryan - I really should watch a few episodes of this and see if I like it. It seems like I would. Oh, and I should also sample the Bosch series too.

Mrs Maisel - One day. And I can't wait until that day finally arrives!

Russian Doll - ???????? Another one that looks good. Where are all these shows coming from? And how can I possibly make time to watch them all? Help?

MASH - I just came across the first two seasons on DVD in some random DVDs I have. I'm very tempted to watch them soon. I was not a big MASH fan when it aired, but I liked it years later. I've never watched these DVDs though I've had them for over a decade. After I finish Cosby with the girls (which is a viewing project that has lost steam and slowed down as season 7 moves along,) I think I'll put these two MASH seasons on the family-time DVD after dinner schedule.

Newhart, MTM Show, Wings, Frasier -
