This comp is so good that when Rhino Handmade put together its complete Rascals box, they included it on a separate disc even though the material is redundant. The Rascals - Time Peace: The Rascals Greatest Hits

Comps don't capture the eclectic nature of the Spoonful because their singles, great as they were, were mainstream for the time. Hums was their high point, after which there was really nowhere to go but down. The Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful (1966)

Personally I would have chosen a career overview/greatest hits - I'm not sure I see any superiority of this as a choice c/w albums like "Daydream" or "Do You Believe in Magic". More energy in their pop folk perhaps (and sometimes downright kookiness like "Henry Thomas"). This does have "Rain on the Roof" and "Summer in the City".
Wait a guldurn minnit. Are you sure you had not heard "Pretty Ballerina"?The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina (1967)

Aside from “Walk Away Renee” had not heard the rest of the songs, but very nice baroque pop album.
I knew Manfred Mann’s “Pretty Flamingo” (and Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman” of course) but not sure about the Left Banke’s “Pretty Ballerina”Wait a guldurn minnit. Are you sure you had not heard "Pretty Ballerina"?
I make up some seriously suspect lyrics to that one.
