Al Cohn & Zoot Sims - Body And Soul (Muse 1973)

Gorgeous session from two old pros. Highlight: an 8 minute Brazilian medley that will take you straight to Rio. Maravilhoso!

Terry-Thomas - Strictly TT (1961)

British comedy at its best. This album could be retitled The Roots Of Monty Python.

:4.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Jimmie Haskell - Count Down! (1959)

Space age pop from Ricky Nelson's arranger, the guy who also wrote the theme to The Hollywood Squares and Bewitched.

Joao Donato - Donato Deodato (Muse 1973)

Contemporary (for the time) Brazilian jazz with lots of electronic keyboards and wah wah guitar. This one holds up pretty well for all that, with a cast that included Randy Brecker and Ray Barretto.

One of the few Muse albums to make its way to Spotify:

Chico Freeman - Spirit Sensitive (India Navigation 1979)

Another jazz label that rarely appears on Spotify. This session is beautiful in its simplicity.

Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa - Black Coffee

Usually quite the power combo, for some reason I'm not very enthusiastic about this album. Beth's voice is no less powerful than always. Joe's guitar is competent but kind of the same old stuff. The backup band is fine. It could be that it's Monday and I'm bored and annoyed at my work. I should probably listen to it again on a Friday to be fair.

Maybe a few drinks might enhance your appreciation. :drink:

I wish it was 5:00 or so, I'd test out the theory. But since it wasn't...

Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa - Seesaw

Much better. So it turns out the new one probably just isn't quite as good. Now I have to listen to the first of their three albums to get a quorum. But I need a break from Bonamassa for now.

Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue

Kenny Barron - Sunset To Dawn (Muse 1973)

Last week I enjoyed Kenny on piano but this electronic keyboard session from 20 years earlier still sounds great. It's on Spotify with an uglified cover:

Webb Wilder - Born To Be Wilder (2008)

Hattiesburg's own Webster turns in a solid live set of roots rock filled with crunchy guitars ala Paul Kossoff and Southern fried vocals. This is actually a re-release of a French CD entitled "It's Live Time!"

:4.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra - Techstar (2017)

Space
The vinyl frontier
In the not so distant future
The music industry is in total collapse
Mankind has lost the funk
And wackness fills the land
A deep sadness grows
After the great cloud server crash of 2069
Many people lose their entire music collections
And become both humorless and disenchanted
Without music
Earth becomes a low-quality MP3 version of itself
This leads to a mass exodus of epic proportions
As told by the prophet five
Funk wizard airlines has introduced low-cost, no-frills space travel
To all walks of mankind
In space, live music is thriving
Vinyl and tape sales are booming
And people have once again found the funk
The people get down
In the cosmos nestled in the Jupiter 6 sector of the Orion Belt
A space station called Techstar is a hotbed of all things analog
Like a Las Vegas in space
Every pleasure and comfort know to man and woman alike
And what happens on Techstar, stays on Techstar
He is joined by his smart and beautiful wife
Former lingerie model and alien activist, Sylvie Phillips
Musical director and guitarist Freddie "Fuzzbox" Johnson
Leads Techstar house band Black Hole
Dr. Casey Bonebreak
Resident on-board doctor who is secretly having an affair with Stone Phillip's wife, Sylvie
JT Cilantro, space janitor
Who has connections and knows how to get things done on Techstar
Professor Tanaka, brilliant Japanese scholar and scientist
Who knows his way around a thing or two
Johnny "Razor" Jones
Space trucker, ladies man, black market trader, and former boyfriend of Sylvie Phillips
Who he's still in love with
Lexina, alien babe hotness
Who kicks serious tail and is smart as a whip
Dirk Lanford is a rich British businessman
Whose family made their fortune in the aerospace industry
He could be a hero or a villain
We are not sure
Detective Carlos Alfonso Ortega, space cop
Originally from Miami, building a case against Razor
For transporting stolen goods across galactic lines
What happens on Techstar
Stays on Techstar
