Paul Frees - Paul Frees and the Poster People (1970)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Long before Rerun Rock and Golden Throats, voiceover maven Paul Frees made an album of rock covers in the voices of Fields, Bogey, Karloff and half a dozen other frequently imitated stars of the 40's and 50's. If you ever wanted to hear Clark Gable tackle "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", here's your chance.

Yehudi Menuhin, Lucerne Festival Orchestra (Wilhelm Furtwangler, cond.) - Beethoven: Violin Concerto (1947)

OS0yNDI4LmpwZWc.jpeg

Two years after the end of World War II, on a summer night in Switzerland the 60 year old German conductor found himself sharing a stage with the master violinist born in America of Lithuanian Jews, 20 years his junior. One can only imagine what they talked about, but the tone of the piece is reflective, not somber. Swedish radio recorded the concert performance in very good sound quality for the period. So we can still appreciate this historic meeting of two great artists at very different times in their lives and careers.

Tennessee Ernie Ford - The Chronological 1951-1953 (Warped comp. 2012)

Cover.jpg

During this two year time period, Capitol built on Ernie's hit duet with Kay Starr by pairing him again with Kay as well as with Helen O'Connell, Ella Mae Morse, Molly Bee and The Dinning Sisters. Even Tex Williams and Bucky Tibbs ventured into the studio with The Pea Picker. None of these singles sold a lot but all are loads of fun.

Dr. Dre had The Chronic and Tennessee Ernie Ford had The Chronological, but not necessarily in that order.
