Dolly Parton - Jolene (1974)

Mostly because I like listening to my name being sung by a purdy woman!
After it was over, instead of smoking a cigarette to luxuriate in the mood, I listened to the album version of John Scofield's cover of "Jolene" from his album "Country For Old Men"

Talking Heads - Little Creatures - album cover

Early albums are classics but as time goes by, really appreciate middle Talking Heads albums like this one and Speaking In Tongues more.

Melissa Aldana - The Echoes of the Inner Prophet (2024)
flisten
Chilean tenor saxophonist who won a few "best new"/"best young" awards/competitions a few years ago, releases an album I finally get around to buying. Her idol was Wayne Shorter and I can hear a lot of his influence here. Lage Lund does a great job on guitar. The whole band makes an impression. Glad I bought this one.

Mary Halvorson - Amaryllis (2022)

The contrary Mary plays an interesting sound and has an unusual ear for what she wants Jazz, and Jazz guitar specifically, to be. She recently released a new album and I want it. Then again, I still hear new stuff when I listen to all her albums and I wondered if maybe I should just listen to what I already own by her and save some money.

Listening to this now, I see I've heard most of the tracks approximately 20 times or so. That surprises me, because it sounds so fresh and new to my ears, that play count hardly seems possible. That's a testament to Halvorson's vision for her sextet and these compositions that just pop. The vibraphone, the trombone, the everything.

Listening to this now, I know I don't need to buy the new one because this one still gives me so much joy. But ... isn't that a reason to get the new one?

Tidbit: It surprised the hell out of me when, on a road trip with my son, he was playing music through the car's speakers from his phone and a song by Halvorson played. I almost ran off the road. He said he couldn't explain why he liked her music but that he liked it a lot. My boy!
Jazzyson also likes Jeremy Pelt a lot more than I've allowed myself to. So I'm making an effort to listen to more Pelt.

Jeremy Pelt - Griot: This Is Important (2021)
flisten

Pelt has done a lot in music, from being a great Jazz trumpeter to being a college professor. Now, he's also writing Jazz history. To accompany this CD (or maybe it should be the other way around) Pelt is writing a series of books titled, "Griot: Examining The Lives Of Jazz's Great Storytellers".

So I ordered that book and this CD. They arrived yesterday and he even signed the book ... glad I ordered them from his personal site. Unfortunately, the hardcover was sold out.
