What Are You Listening To? December 2019

Various Artists - Kansas City soundtrack (1996)

Watched this with son earlier today. I first watched this just after I started getting into Jazz, and have loved it every time I watched it. The movie (and album) features several Jazz musicians who were active at that time: Nicholas Payton, Geri Allen, Russell Malone, Joshua Redman, James Carter, Kevin Mahogany, David Murray, David "Fathead" Newman, Don Byron and many others. The story is good enough, but I was constantly frustrated today because the story kept getting in the way of the music. As soon as it ended, I had to put on this CD to enjoy the music uninterrupted.

When this came out, I had an office job at a software company, where the company culture at such places was starting to get that "cool" employee-friendly vibe. I always had music playing in my office. At one point, I think I left this CD on repeat for about two months straight. Over the course of two years, this one and its sequel got probably over 1000 plays in that office. Watching the movie, my son asked me how could I possibly know every note to every song because I kept hum-playing along with the band, even when the music was low in the mix during dialogue scenes.

Simply fantastic!

Bruce Springsteen - Winterland 11/16/1978

A Christmas present for Bruce fans - the latest Archive Series release is Springsteen's TWO Winterland concerts in December 1978. The December 15 show is often touted as one of Bruce's best ever, but (perhaps because it's less familiar), fans on message boards have been touting the next night's concert as sounding "even better". Happy to have them both in good quality :)

Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (2007)

The Shepherd's Dog

Alright, the hip-shaking sinful rock n' roll part of today (my Bruce concert) has finished. Wouldn't call this either, but haven't played this one in years. My wife's selection in our year-by-year family listening project.

J.Cole - 4 Your Eyez Only (2014)

From Ft Bragg to St John's to Hip Hop star. My son's fave rapper, and one of my contemporary faves. Hey, gotta support NC's own. One of a breed of introspective lyricists who I tend to label emo-rappers, but in a good way. Jermaine is a guy who is comfortable in his own skin, comfortable discussing his faults and fears, but also has the requisite swagger. He and Kendrick lead the way for me with today's rappers.

My son went to a summer program at a university in Fayetteville this past summer. When I took him there, we rode by J.Cole's childhood home, the namesake of his album "2014 Forest Hills Drive". From my son's reaction, you would have thought we were visiting Graceland or the White House. He insisted I park in front of the 10-foot-gated vacant house and sit for a long while so he could "soak up the spirit of J. Cole"
