To be honest, this album was a throw in when I needed Ivan Fischer's performance of the Liszt Faust Symphony for my 1001 Classical Records project. That piece was cheaper in a three-fer than by itself so Bela Bartok and Johannes Brahms came along for the ride with Franz. Lucky for me they did.

I enumerated all of the pieces included here to illustrate the depth of Bartok's fascination with the ethnic music of his homeland. And who better to lead the Budapest Festival Orchestra than its founder, Hungarian Ivan Fischer? This delightful album earned a Gramophone Award, with a citation stating "as Mandarins go, they don't come more miraculous than this."
