The voice is not something I instantly like, but it is effective as a folk (ETA: and gospel music) instrument. It reminds of something between Beirut (Zach Condon) and Syd Matters.
I guess in retrospect, it's the same year as PJ Harvey's debut so maybe BOTH were ahead of their time This one gets far less attention but still pretty good
Edit: learning! Led by female vocalist Carol Van Dijk, Bettie Serveert is not someone's name but rather Dutch for "Bettie Serves", or "Service to Bettie", which is the title of a book written by Dutch tennis player Betty Stöve, who made it to the Wimbledon Ladies Singles final in 1977
