Jackie Paris - The Chronogical Jackie Paris 1947-1953 (Warped comp. 2024)

Jackie was a talented jazz singer and guitarist who had a long career but never quite seemed to reach his potential. Perhaps, like Charles Brown, his smooth piano trio style was too similar to that of Nat King Cole.

This 2009 documentary looks really interesting.

The Beatles - Introducing...The Beatles (Vee-Jay 1964)

NS00ODU5LmpwZWc.jpeg

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

I bought this new as a cutout at the May Company department store here in Westside Pavilion, our late lamented mall. Before Capitol got its grubby hands on the masters, Vee-Jay released the UK Please Please Me album in the same running order, minus the title cut and "Ask Me Why". 12 song LP's were the norm for the American market rather than 14 due to differences in the way royalties were calculated. The sound on this version is true stereo, mixed hotter and narrower than Capitol's style. I didn't A-B them, but I bet these are the same stereo masters that EMI used for its Parlophone release.

June Christy - The Complete Studio Recordings With The Stan Kenton Orchestra (rec. 1945-51, CCM comp. 1994)

A year after opening as an online record store specializing in reissues, Collectors Choice Music started its own label to restore even more dusty grooves to the marketplace. Between 1994 and 2010, CCM released hundreds of CD's in all genres.

This June Christy collection was their very first release. Kenton aficionados like myself probably already have these classic sides but it's sure nice to have all of June's vocals in one place. Hearing them together shows just what a great fit she was with the Kenton band, more than holding her own against its bold orchestral sound.

Horslips - The Book of Invasions: A Celtic Symphony (1976)

Can you make a prog album that rocks using fiddles, concertinas, accordions, mandolin, tin whistles, and uilleann pipes? In the process can you
depict the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a book of Irish mythology (Wiki link left intact for the curious)? The answer is a resounding "yes". The sixth album by Horslips is brilliant from start to finish.

The Pine Needles - The Pine Needles (2010)

This delightful album was a freebie from one of the nice folks at MusicBoomerang. The group's eponymous website sez:

Enchanting and exciting, this acoustic band (stand up bass, vocals, guitar, fiddle, light world drums) draws upon pop, jazz, world, classic country, rock, folk, bluegrass, and jam band sounds when composing and interpreting a diverse array of classics. The Pine Needles signature soundscape is enjoyed at festivals, theaters, wineries, parties & weddings.

The Pine Needles were founded in February of 2005 out of a love for the organic, vital tones of the American acoustic stringed instruments. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, the band has evolved from a duo with just bass and guitar, to a trio with mandolin, to a quartet with percussion, bass, guitar, and violin. The band began by performing mostly historic American folk and jazz standards from the 20th century, eventually turning to composing in a variety of genres including bluegrass, soul, acoustic folk rock, gypsy jazz, and progressive acoustic music. In 2010 the band released their self titled debut CD “The Pine Needles” which received several distinctions including being a finalist in the 8th annual IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) competition, and a 4 out of 5 star review from the United Kingdom's esteemed “Maverick” Magazine.

Beverly Kelly -Beverly Kelly Sings (1958)

AMG tells us:

Bev Kelly made a strong impression in the 1950s as a jazz singer, and has made a few musical comebacks since then while pursuing other careers. Kelly started studying classical piano when she was five, continuing through high school. She also studied classical voice at 14 and four years later was awarded a vocal scholarship to Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music. During 1954-1957, she was part of a group billed as "The Pat Moran Trio featuring Bev Kelly." All four musicians (which included pianist Moran) sang in four-part harmony. They recorded two albums for Bethlehem and were part of an ambitious multi-artist recording of the music from Porgy and Bess. In late 1957, Kelly recorded her first album as a leader. She went out on her own, recording two albums for Riverside (Love Locked Out and Bev Kelly in Person) and working in San Francisco with pianist Flip Nunez and altoist Pony Poindexter.

In 1961 when she was 27, Kelly decided to stop performing so as to raise her son. She settled in the Los Angeles area where she wrote music and poetry, worked as a professional photographer, did some session work, and was a vocal coach. In 1966, she returned to singing in clubs on a part-time basis, performing with local greats including trombonist Frank Rosolino and pianist Hampton Hawes. In 1972 she made three albums for Reader's Digest in London and a few years later she worked with Al Williams' quintet in Long Beach. During 1978-1980 she was an investor in the Jazz Safari, a club in Long Beach where she occasionally performed.

Bev Kelly earned a Doctorate in Psychology in 1984, becoming a psychotherapist. She has mostly stayed retired from music since then, although in 2002 she recorded Portrait of Nine Dreams, a set of autobiographical poems.
