The Firm - The Album (1997)
Speaking of supergroups .... for those not in the know, this combination was for Hip Hop heads like a combination in 1978 of Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, and Greg Allman ... or something like that. Yet, instead of being the greatest album of the year, it was kind of like the 17th best Hip Hop album of the year or the 37th best. Not bad, but dammit, not great. Maybe even not very very good. Just good enough to not hate, except I have to hate that it's not great. Because it should have been.
The first and very long review on RYM says what I'm trying to say, much better than I am saying it.

Maybe egos got in the way?

Yes. And probably a sloppy approach to the lyrics that resulted in half the songs sounding decent but being unintentionally funny or cringeworthy. I think they all thought that because everyone involved (rappers, producers, special guests) had recently been involved in hits that were also critically praised, they all thought this was going to automatically be great without them putting in real effort on the creative side. They were wrong.
