Cibo Matto - Viva! La Woman (1996)

Rhino's "Album Of The Day". Trip hop with elements of jazz, funk and bossa nova. "Cibo Matto" means "Crazy Food" in Italian. Tutto bene! :nickyboy:

Sonny Rollins - The Bridge (1962)

This is great.

However, it's amazing to listen to this and Coltrane's "Live At The Village Vanguard" and reconcile that they could have been released in the same year by two musicians ostensibly playing the same "type" of music. It's like listening to 1988's "Tougher Than Leather" by Run DMC, and following it with NWA's "Straight Outta Compton". Again, two albums of the same genre from the same year, both great but not nearly the same.

This.

Steppenwolf ~ Monster (1969)

It's hard to believe that this album tops out at a mere 33 minutes long, what with Monster/Suicide/America being almost 9 1/2 minutes in length.

I used to think it's anti-war, sociopolitical commentary was overblown, but it fits just right in today's Amerikkka.

It's as if they were futurists.

Grover Washington Jr - A Secret Place (1976)

Looking at who contributes to this, not to mention the headliner, it's hard to believe this doesn't receive more public/critical praise. Maybe it's because it followed two fantastic albums.

This has Dave Grusin (p/k), Eric Gale (g), Harvey Mason (d), other fine musicians, Rudy Van Gelder engineering the sound, Creed Taylor producing the entire affair, and Grover's mastery of the form continuing from every preceding album. And it sounds as good as it should. I wouldn't have been surprised if this was nearly as revered as Mister Magic. But it's not. And that means that anyone who enjoys Mister Magic but hasn't heard this, has something to look forward to.

David Binney - Free To Dream (1999)

I just sent him a message to complain that he is torturing some of his fans by releasing some new music sans a CD offering. C'mon man, you're sticking your thumb in my eye!!!! ;)
