As always, many of the pieces on Purest Form are cluttered and ultra-psychedelic, trademarks of Francies' nu-jazz sound

Every song on Purest From bleeds personality and charm, so even as you watch him deconstruct My Favorite Things into something completely new, there's never a second where you question if the time spent with him is worth it.

Maria Cole - Maria Cole (1960)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Last month we spun Maria's debut 10-inch LP from 1954. That album maximized her smoky, intimate voice in a small jazz setting, However, Dot brought in their musical jack-of-all-trades Billy Vaughn who slathered on the cloying string ork and annoying background warblers. A couple of the slower numbers succeed, but uptempo novelties like "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Oh Baby Mine (I Get So Lonely)" are just embarrassing attempts to sound contemporary.
