Shovels & Rope - By Blood (2019)

I don't listen to enough S+R to offer meaningful comparisons to their other work, but I like this one a lot. It has a bit of an experimental feel, like they are trying to stretch a few boundaries in their Americana folk duo landscape.

:4.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Chris Shiflett - West Coast Town (2017)

Over his long career, The Foo Fighters' lead guitarist has fronted bands playing everything from punk to arena rock. His third solo side project finds Chris in an alt country setting produced by Dave Cobb in Nashville, complete with steel. To my surprise, this album offers more than an excuse for him to trot out his trusty Telecaster for some tasty licks. Santa Barbara born Chris (dig the offshore oil island on the cover) has assembled and performed a strong collection of hard hitting songs with a genuine blue collar country sensibility, more Bakersfield than Central Coast. His fiery playing adds tones ranging from Foo crunch to Don Rich chicken pickin'.

RIYL Mike Ness, early Steve Earle.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter.
