Various Artists - Mersey Beat (comp. 1983)

Vinyl Spin of the Day.

Parlophone, The Beatles' label, went deep into their vault to explore the primordial ooze from which the Fab Four emerged. Each of the two platters begins with a familiar Beatles hit, works quickly past top groups like Gerry & The Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas and then gets down to serious business. Did you ever actually hear Rory Storm & The Hurricanes (Ringo's prior group) or The Pete Best Four? Neither did I. They are both here along with The Undertakers, Tommy Quickly, Ian & The Zodiacs and a bunch of other Liverpudlians trying to ride the guitar, bass and drum wave.

This generous double LP collection was authoritatively compiled and annotated by Bill Harry, founder of Mersey Beat magazine and one of John Lennon's classmates at Liverpool Art College. The sound is glorious mono, showing that Abbey Road lavished its technical skills on the famous and the obscure alike. This one has never been released on CD.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Various Artists - Strutting At The Bronze Peacock (rec. 1950-53, Ace comp. 1987)

Vinyl Spin of the Day #2.

Tough electric R&B from Don Robey's Peacock Records. Memphis Slim, the best known artist here, has four songs on this collection but of equal quality are obscurities like Cherokee Conyers, Al Grey and Joe "Papoose" Fritz.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Various Artists - "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (Radio Broadcast 1938, Vintage Jazz Classics release 1990)

Irving Berlin's 50th birthday offered CBS Radio the opportunity to mount this lavish all star tribute to the songwriter. It was timed to coincide with the release of the 20th Century-Fox Berlin musical extravaganza, which became the studio's highest grossing film of the Depression years. The radio show took in the broad panorama of Irving's long career that comprised more than 800 songs dating back more than three decades at the time by including stars both old and new.

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. A priceless snapshot of American music on the eve of WWII.
