Shannon Bolin - Rare Wine (1956)

Vinyl Rip Of The Day.

Shannon was an unjustly neglected Broadway performer, best known for playing Meg in both the stage and film versions of "Damn Yankees". For this superb album she hand picked a dozen similarly neglected songs from some of the finest composers on the Great White Way.

Jose James - Lean On Me (2018)

Excellent collection of Bill Withers covers.
On the other hand, it's not as excellent as any collection/album of Bill Withers originals, so I'm not sure why I might recommend this ahead of any of the great one's own albums. However, if you find those unavailable, these will do very well.

The Denison/Kimball Trio ~ Plays the Music of Walls in the City (1994)

This might appeal to Rick. It is Duane Dennison of Jesus Lizard, along with Jim Kimball of Firewater and Mule.

Of course, there's another guy, too ...to make that three, or more.

David Binney - Out of Airplanes (2006)

A freer album than usual from Binney, but not too free as to be unenjoyable.

Emily Remler - Firefly (1981)

Thanks to the Mosaic Records Jazz Gazette, I recently discovered jazz guitarist Emily Remler. Her all too familiar life story is here:

https://jazztimes.com/features/emily-remler-rise-decline/

Dead at age 32 as a result of substance abuse, she left behind a marvelous recorded legacy for us to enjoy. This was her debut, a stunning album for any one, let alone a 24 year old. Her work is vaguely reminiscent of Wes Montgomery, but Emily has a fatter tone and rocks harder. Remler's regular bassist, Bob Maize, facilitates her experimental side with some licks worthy of Jaco Pastorius.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter.

Sadly, this one is not on Spotify.

Spotify does have her East to Wes album, though.

I neglected to mention that Emily was married to Monty Alexander, one of my favorite neglected jazz pianists, when she made this record. She and Monty share a strong rhythmic feel as well as a sense of sheer joy in their playing.
