Steve Coleman - Live at the Village Vanguard: Vol 1: The Embedded Sets (discs 1 and 2) (2018)

I have been very detached from being intense about listening to music lately. So many other things are tugging at my mind that I don't have the time to focus on music. For the past few weeks, I find I put a CD in the home-office player and listen to it once or twice a day for a few days, before I think to change it. Once a week or so, I'll have a spurt where I listen to three or four CDs one day, then I'll fall back in the long play listening pattern.

This has been in the player for the past few days. And when I did change it, I changed from disc 1 to disc 2, and a few days later, back to disc 1.

Skyzoo + Pete Rock - Retropolitan (2019)

I love Skyzoo's rhymes, but the production on over half of each album is not up to the level of his lyrics/delivery. It's like putting Ella Fitzgerald in a band with a kazoo and rubberband.

Deciding to pair him with Pete Rock was a stroke of genius. These aren't the beats of the year, but this is high quality professional work.

Mavis Staples - We Get By

Edit: I admire Mavis Staples and love to hear a couple of tracks of hers or when she guests on others' works. But I rarely make it through one of her own albums. This one is a real pleasure. I understand it was produced by Ben Harper. Maybe that's the difference.
