And I'm just going to put this out there: This lovely woman's album covers are a delight to behold. Tom Waits is working from a handicap in that regard.
Coleman Hawkins - At The Savoy 1940 (Sunbeam comp 1973)
Vinyl Rip Of The Day.
After finishing 59 albums of Benny Goodman, Sunbeam turned to other artists. The 200 series featured Tommy Dorsey, Ziggy Elman, Harry James and now Coleman Hawkins. It's hard to overestimate the importance of these reissues back in the days before CD box sets.
This album featured two live shows from the Savoy Ballroom recorded (or "transcribed" in the lingo of the day) on NBC radio airchecks. Hawk really stretches out beyond the 3:00 limit for studio recordings, with a couple of flagwavers running almost double that length.
