Famous Groupies - Chameleon Sessions (2021)

Edit: I'm glad this isn't my introduction to the group, because I would've quit here. Cheesy soft rock. The first song sounds like the theme for a late 70s TV show.
If it's the song I'm thinking of, your opinion is directly on the money.

It's immediately catchy, but there's no substance (or "there") there.

ETA: I think of "ABC" by the Jackson 5. Not a bad thing, but still....

A great theme demands to be seen through to its trilogic conclusion...
Tom Harrell - Roman Nights (2010)

There's no gladiator on the cover, but I tried. I thought of album covers (in my collection) with knights, warriors, soldiers, barbarians, but could not come up with another one that had a gladiator.

Instead, I settled on one whose title mentions Rome. Sorry, it's the best I got right now.

Oscar Peterson - Plays Pretty, Album #2 (Clef 10" LP 1954)

Indeed he does. :lala: In this case, with the help of the redoubtable Ray Brown.

Me’Shell NdegéOcello - Dance of the Infidel: The Spirit Music Jamia (2005)

In the spirit of being spiritual Jazz like Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders might have done in the 70s. Except that genre, like all music, has continually adapted over the past 50 years. New examples of spiritual Jazz would include Kamasi Washington and Shabaka.

This album and Me'Shell's 2023 much-lauded The Omnichord Real Book (her first release for Blue Note) have that same seeking vibe as Alice and Kamasi. The music starts out one way and keeps reaching and reaching and reaching for ... something.

Primarily a lyric-less affair, hired guns include Oliver Lake, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Garrett, Don Byron and other Jazz musicians.

London Sinfonietta (Oliver Knussen, cond.) - Britten: The Prince of the Pagodas (comp. 1956, rec. 1990)

Benjamin Britten composed three ballets, but two of them were suites synthesizing the music of Rossini. The Prince of the Pagodas is another pastiche of sorts, with the narrative incorporating parts of "King Lear", "Beauty and the Beast" and a French fairy tale called "The Green Serpent." Wiki's description of the plot is priceless:

An Emperor must decide which of his two daughters should inherit the throne, and he chooses the evil older sister Belle Epine over the young and beautiful Belle Rose. Belle Rose is taken by magical flying frogs to Pagoda Land, and meets the Prince of Pagoda Land who is in the guise of a Salamander. Belle Rose and the Prince return to the land of her father and confront her evil sister, in the end driving her away.

Britten happened to be vacationing in Bali while he was writing the music. As a result, there is a strong Indonesian gamelan flavor throughout. The composer himself recorded an abridged version of the score but this seems to be the only recording of the complete package. It is a joy from start to finish.

It's just like I told y'all, but you wouldn't listen!

Of course, she left me when I assumed human form, but that's not so romantic.

During my years of dating before Mrs. Ojai came along, twice I went out with women who had one sister whom I also knew. Both times I found out too late that I had chosen Belle Epine.
