From familiar names like Lonnie Donegan and Laurie London to artists unknown on these shores like Russ Hamilton and Shane Fenton & The Fentones, this generous 32 track comp brings the full sweep of pop music B.B. (Before The Beatles). Unusually for the time, Sire was able to license the original versions from Decca, CBS, EMI, Pye and Phonogram.

Part of me hates opening a can of worms by deciding maybe a musician has achieved possible-JazzyR-fave status and deserves more listening, because I'll end up buying several CDs at a time when I should be minimizing in almost every respect. But Snidero has become the musical pet-project of the moment for me, so here I dive.
The other 99% of me is like, "Fuck that! Buy the music! Satisfy your ears!"
P.S. - This is really good. A great Jazz-meets-a-hint-of-Asia album. In this case, Asia is Korea and part of the hinting is the inclusion of gayageum (zither-like traditional Korean instrument). I read one review that said this isn't really a full mixture of two different types of music... it's more like Duke Ellington's and Dave Brubeck's albums with supposed outside influences, in that it is primarily the sort of music these musicians always make, with a minute dash of something different. I concur.
That said, I can't wait to play this back-to-back with Kenny Garrett's excellent "Beyond The Wall" album.

Tommy Dorsey - That Sentimental Gentleman (rec. 1940-1944, RCA Victor comp. 1957)

I bought this long ago on a business trip to San Francisco. It is a well-programmed 2-LP collection of songs taken from radio airchecks. The Dorsey band was at its peak with Bunny Berigan, Jo Stafford, Buddy Rich and other luminaries aboard. The highlight has to be Frank Sinatra's final show before going solo, in which he is heard handing the reins over to his successor, Dick Haymes.

You know? I never equated Acker Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore" with the roots of British rock.

They would have never listened to anything remotely associated with rock and roll.
