George Strait - Live At The Lone Star Cafe, New York City (rec. 1984, Hotspur 2015)

This gray market release from Cyprus contains a complete syndicated Silver Eagle radio show from the best known roots music venue in the Big Apple. In 1976, The Lone Star Cafe opened at 5th Avenue and 13th Street, topped by a giant iguana.

The club remained open in that location for 13 years, featuring acts from Albert Collins to Ernest Tubb. This was Strait's second Silver Eagle show from the Lone Star, having appeared there in 1982 at the dawn of his success. By 1984, he had amassed five consecutive #1 country singles and had polished his Ace In The Hole road band to perfection. For this 77 minute show, George performed a robust 26 song set list that included a well-paced variety of his own hits, album cuts and Western Swing standards. He showed a lot of confidence by opening with a cover of George Jones' very first single, "Why Baby Why" and closing with Merle Haggard's "Honky Tonk Night Time Man". No identity crisis here, despite his youth . The digitally remastered sound sparkles, with lots of crowd enthusiasm. :Matt:

Various Artists: The Phonographic Yearbook: 1904 "Call It The L:and Of Dreams" (Archeophone comp. 2022)

Where were you in 1904? Had you been alive, doubtless you would have attended the World's Fair in St. Louis to celebrate the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. Several of the songs in this recent Archeophone collection make reference to the Fair: from the obvious ("Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis", "Meet Me In Dreamland") to the more obscure ("Under The Anheuser Bush", reputed to be the first commercial jingle). Billy Murray leads the pack with 5 of the 27 songs here. He was a big favorite of my grandmother, who would have been 12 years old.

Food for thought: we are farther from that Worlds Fair than the folks attending it were from the Louisiana Purchase.

India Adams - Comfort Me With Apples (1959)

NS0zMjMwLnBuZw.jpeg

The title song was written by Vic Mizzy, best known for the theme to The Addams Family TV show. He drew it from the Song of Solomon 2:4-5:

He brought me to the banqueting house,
and his banner over me was love.

Sustain me with raisins;
refresh me with apples,
for I am sick with love.

The lyrics morphed into:

Comfort me with apples, fragrant oil and wine
Strengthen me with raisins and pomegranates fine
Soothe me with your scent and the sound of cooing doves
Comfort me with apples and love

Comfort me with apples, frankincense and myrrh
Strengthen me with saffron and aromatic herbs
Soothe me with your words and the wonders from above
Comfort me with apples and love

For lo, the winter’s past and the rain is gone
The time of the birds is at hand
The vines are sweet, the flowers bloom,
the bride awaits the bridegroom
and the voice of the turtle is heard in the land

She is my beloved, beautiful and fair
gathering fruits and mandrakes by the fountain there
You are my beloved, the one that I dream of
Comfort me with apples and love
Comfort me with apples and love

I'm cool with apples.

But, what's with "Tabasco"?
