What's For Dinner?

My wife is down in Philly for an overnight visit. She has already had a Philly-style roast pork sandwich for lunch and is having cheesesteaks tonight for dinner!:mad::mad:

Well, then! Since she is enjoying the foods I am missing, I might as well be happy here tonight! Making bacon wrapped scallops with a side of a half dozen oysters for dinner. Take that! (wait...she won't. she doesn't eat seafood.)

REAL Philly hoagies (and soft pretzels), hand delivered by my wife. Hats off to Kovac's in Media, PA for a fantastic hoagie!

She asked to have the "wet" ingredients set aside so the hoagies wouldn't get soggy. They guy asked her if she is traveling with them. He said a woman from NYC was just in earlier today and got 12 to go.

Roasted chicken stuffed with Myer lemons, garlic, and herbs, with pan roasted potatoes and carrots on the side. Also, charred Brussels sprouts with butter, herbs, and lemon on the side.

What are you making tonight? Give me ideas for dinner tomorrow!

A BLT with a fried egg on it, on marble rye with this spicy mayo and a caeser salad on the side. Yes, I am Mr. Excitement in the kitchen these days.

But the reason I replied is to ask the difference in Meyer lemons vs. traditional. I have some recipes that ask for Meyer but I always have the other on hand so I just use them.

You sandwich sounds delicious! A fried egg is a great addition to many sandwiches and hamburgers.

Meyer lemons are a bit different than regular lemons. They were originally a cross between the standard variety (Eureka, usually) of lemon and a mandarin orange. Therefore, they are not as acidic as standard lemons. You can almost eat them out of hand. Almost. They are smaller and rounder than standard lemons, and their rind, which is very thin, is also much more flavorful, with spicier and more floral notes (think of bergamot and jasmine) than regular lemon zest, which makes it a great addition to sauces and vinaigrettes. And while regular lemons are available year-round, Meyers are generally available only in the fall and early winter. My Meyer tree produced well this year, considering its small size and the lousy weather we had.

You can use regular lemons in place of Meyers, but the flavor of your dish will be much sharper. Perhaps add a little splash of orange juice to balance the acidity.

You're lucky. I've got one whole lemon on my little tree. :(
All our citrus did well this summer. The orange tree has 5 oranges on it, the key lime is loaded, the kumquat made a come back after looking like it was going to die in the spring, the Persian lime has about 10 limes. It's going to be time pretty soon to bring them inside.
