A Century of Music

Started 1984 albums today:

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
Prince - Purple Rain (1984)
Van Halen - 1984 (1984)
Brian Adams - Reckless (1984)
Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos (1984)

I think I've said it before - I have an internal struggle with each of the daily listens in this thread. I feel I should like/love a majority of the albums listed to "like" the post. And usually, when it's a day like this where I only own one of the albums and have only heard one other from beginning to end (and only twice or thrice at that) I feel I'd be lying to "like" this one.

But when Purple Rain is the album, the "like" is out of my hands. It's a done deal. Maybe even "love".

BTW, I never feel I have to actually like (or have listened to) an album in the Listening' threads to "like" a post. It's enough for me to know that Zeebs (or whoever) really feels that listen, and I feel good liking the sentiment of loving music. Maybe I should think about that dichotomy? Nah

Quite the random assortment of 1986 cleanup albums
A bit of a cheat with Bruce's first live set as it's 40 tracks (!) spanned the decade prior. Still as a Springsteen fan, this release (his first since Born in the USA two years earlier) was a huge release at the time, hotly anticipated. Springsteen was known for his lengthy, sprawling live sets and this boxed set did not disappoint (especially as it included several songs not yet released in the studio)

Then, on to Slayer - not a big thrash fan, but prefer Metallica to Slayer. This album is huge for thrash fans; for me, well, it's mercifully 29 minutes long.

The Good Earth, the Feelies sophomore effort, is certainly not as good as Crazy Rhythms (released 6 years earlier), but I've always enjoyed it's vibe - mellow (coproduced by fan and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck) but no less filled with great guitars

Haven't spun 5150 since college - at the time it came out, thought "Hey, maybe these guys can make it without Diamond Dave". Grittier but more polished (befitting of the mid 80s era) with far less character and little humor. Remember seeing Van Hagar live with Hagar making frequent jabs at Roth; even at 18 felt that was very petty.

Getting through some more 1987 albums before the week's end including some popular albums of the time, Public Enemy's debut, and Dinosaur Jr.s seminal alternative album.
Delighted to listen to Georges's Cloud Nine again, as it's been many years since visiting it. I'm not saying it's a great album, but it's enjoyable enough - perhaps a bit poppy (influenced by Jeff Lynne) for many. Still a nostalgic pick - remember, for some reason, feeling happy for George that he had another successful album (his first since 1982's meh Gone Troppo). Sadly (aside from his Wilburys stuff) he would only have one more studio album (2002's Brainwashed)

A very fruitful Friday playing 1988 albums
The Traveling Wilburys album is certainly a mixed bag but a fun nostalgia piece. Dylan's contributions are top notch
Living Colour was a bad I enjoyed in college a great deal (wow college was way back in '88, ay). I always seem to remember to break out Vivid every 4-5 years (indeed last.fm confirms 2016) and each time ask myself why it's been so long - good album
Ditto to 16 Lovers Lane an album I only discovered 10 years ago but really is a nice slice of pop goodness.

Not a very productive day of listening with just three albums, but I did start with what I feel are the best three albums of the year.

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising (1989)
Nirvana - Bleach (1989)
The Cure - Disintegration (1989)
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever (1989)

Never been a Cure fan at all, but perhaps for the first time (and have spun Disintegration several times over the year), the album gelled. It is endless at 71 minutes but kind of soaked in the album's vibe today.
Out of all of these, enjoy De La Soul's debut the most - wonderfully humorous

Welcome to another decade! Today starts 1990! Have I really been doing this since 1920? On the one hand, man, I feel like I've come so far. OTOH, though it seems hard to believe, 1990 was 30 years ago - I have thirty more weeks of this! Sigh - why did I do this? Nah, it's been great.
And here's some of the songs on today's 1990 playlist

Started 1990 albums today - compared to the monster musical year coming next year in '91, this year kind of pales in comparison. Still some goodies as can be seen today, but not as "deep" a year in my opinion.
Great year for hip hop actually with Public Enemy, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, and A Tribe Called Quest - some of those albums later, but will start the week with Public Enemy

A lot of intriguing music - I'm not sure any of these would hit a personal top 100 (as, say, It Takes a Nation of Millions... and Doolittle would) but that's why it's so nice revisiting these albums. They're not albums I break out as often (Bossanova is probably my most listened to out of these six - really enjoy it but it doesn't wow me like the Pixies' first two. I know Rick enjoys it more).

The La's self-titled album is definitely better than I remember - the rest of the songs sometimes get forgotten c/w "There's She Goes". Haven't spun Happy Mondays album in ages. I love The Stone Roses so much that this other Madchester classic gets short shrift.
