Wanna get some of this playlist in today:

2197) "Here Comes the Rain Again" by Eurythmics (1981)
2196) "How Will I Know" by Whitney Houston (1985)
2195) "A Love Supreme, Part 2: Resolution" by John Coltrane (1965)
2194) "Damn I Wish I Were Your Lover" by Sophie B. Hawkins (1992)

Thoughts:
a) We are barreling towards (alright not exactly barreling) the top 2000 songs. I can feel your excitement ;)
b) I suspect "Hey Ya" will be much higher than "Ya Hey"
c) "Begin the Beguine" was one of the top songs of the 1930s swing era - as such, this is quite a low ranking
d) The division of different parts of A Love Supreme (we had one part earlier) - I'm not sure I would've done it. Really jazz-wise should be considered as a single element (almost like ranking individual movements of a symphony)

It's palpable.
b) I suspect "Hey Ya" will be much higher than "Ya Hey"
Without a doubt.
c) "Begin the Beguine" was one of the top songs of the 1930s swing era - as such, this is quite a low ranking
Could Shaw's star be beginning to dim?
d) The division of different parts of A Love Supreme (we had one part earlier) - I'm not sure I would've done it. Really jazz-wise should be considered as a single element (almost like ranking individual movements of a symphony)
Or, clapping in-between movements. How gauche!

2177) "Desire Lines" by Deerhunter (2010)
2176) "Ex-Factor" by Lauryn Hill (1998)
2175) "Without Me" by Eminem (2002)

Thoughts
a) Good list to start the day
b) Back-to-back Bruce (both appropriately ranked IMO)
c) "Sixty Minute Man" - oh those sly early-50s rhythm and blues singers
d) Speaking of not-too-subtle subtexts, "Pictures of Lily" - always loved Townshend's songwriting humor
e) Nice scene in the underrated film Logan Lucky where a West Virginia community at a child's beauty pageant sing "Take Me Home...". Not a huge Denver fan, but that song seems to have an emotional resonance I can't describe (and I'm not even from WV where it is the state song).
f) Another Foo Fighters song - we've discussed how well represented they are but I think they get extra points from many because of Grohl's Nirvana connection as well as their status as a remaining popular rock group in an era where hip hop has taking command

2120) "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips with The Twilights
2119) "Sam Stone" by John Prine
2118) "Play with Fire" by The Rolling Stones

Thoughts:
a) I'm constantly amazed at some big songs that wind up down here at the 2000s - I tell my wife "They're gonna run out of songs!" But of course they're not. Still a bit surprised that "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Sea of Love are down here.
b) The biggest injustice is Marty Robbins "El Paso" - definitely should be ranked better - seminal early country crossover song
c) "Hey Bulldog" has that feeling of a song quickly knocked off by The Beatles, but damn it's fun
d) Not a big fan, as you might expect, of late 90s boy bands but "I Want it That Way" is one I can stand and actually enjoy. I'm absolutely sure it's because of this (sorry not the original video)

e) What a country. I can't help whenever I hear El Paso but think of a comedy take on it by Steve Martin that I saw on TV around age 12. Of course it's available (yay I didn't imagine it). It came from a TV comedy special called Comedy Is Not Pretty. Here for your enjoyment:

^
Gotta agree with you about the high quality of the songs here. Yardbirds and Stones both got a lot of airplay in LA back in the day. That Steve Martin parody is a keeper.

2098) "Bizness" by tUnE-yArDs (2011)
2097) "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass (1965)

a) Ah, Fontella Bass' "Rescue Me" - the song everyone initially thinks is Aretha
b) Last night making this playlist, I kept remarking to my wife "Are You Gonna Be My Girl is NOT better than El Paso. It's just not!" (she's very patient). I mean it's a nice White Stripes rip-off that was very popular so I understand its presence but c'mon
c) Of course then I hit Gilbert O'Sullivan - I love 70s treacle as much as the next guy but c'mon
d) Gave up on REM past the 20th century but really liked "Imitation of Life
e) I LOVE "Made of Stone" - such a wonderful tune by The Stone Roses, probably my fave by them
f) Slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan...
g) "Shake It Off" pretty tuneful. Couldn't find a nice video without lots of ads, commentary but if you can catch The Rock lip-synching it on Lip Sync Battle, he's fantastic
h) "Bizness" was pretty good but I wanted to hate it because of the hipster alternating of capital and lower-case letters

Next up:

2078) "Nag Nag Nag" by Cabaret Voltaire (1979)
2077) "Brother Sport" by Animal Collective (2009)
2076) "Sucker MC's" by Run-D.M.C. (1983)
2075) "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers Band (1973)

Thoughts:
Wow! What a lineup - knew (and enjoyed) almost all the songs and even the ones that I was unfamiliar with (the Argentinian Soda Stereo) were pretty darn good. Several songs that I'd rank better, for example "I Can See Clearly Now" for some reason has a feel-good hold on me (must be its simplicity). "In the Court..." would also personally be much better ranked
Biggest injustice honestly is The Weavers' rendition of Lead Belly's "Goodnight Irene" which is such a good singalong folk song. It lasted 13 weeks at #1 in 1950 (the number one seller of that year).

Hey! Four days in a row!
2074) "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World (2001)
2073) "Kill V. Main" by Grimes (2015)
2072) "Hearts on Fire" by Cut Copy (2007)
2071) "Y.M.C.A." by Village People (1978)

2060) "While You Wait for the Others" by Grizzly Bear (2000)
2059) "Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows (1993)

2056) "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" by Scott McKenzie (1967)
2055) "No Pussy Blues" by Grinderman (2007)
2054) "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt
2053) "If You Could Read My Mind' by Gordon Lightfoot
2052) "Uncle John's Band" by Grateful Dead

Thoughts:
a) Could I pass the 2000 song mark today - I dunno, busy day. But I'm hopeful :)
b) Everyone who loves the Beatles probably has that one song that was popular and everyone enjoys but you don't - I've never enjoyed "Hello Goodbye" much sadly (though it sounds great and is produced excellently)
c) Yes, one of the biggest drunk singalong song, karaoke song makes it's appearance. Y-M-C-A!
d) Speaking of "Y.M.C.A.", I've always thought that the line "I felt the whole world was so tight" was "I felt the whole world was so jive" - I gotta say I like my lyric better
e) On this updated list, The xx really has had a recent presence - this is like their third song in the low 2000s
f) a number of personal faves on this list. I'm not a big Dead listener but "Uncle John's Band" is my favorite Dead song. Also "If You Could Read My Mind" is probably my favorite 70s singer/songwriter song. Not a huge genre for me but, as I've stated with many 70s/early 80s thing lot of exposure and thus nostalgia from my childhood. Not sure what it is about Lightfoot's delivery in this one but it moves me.

Hey! Four days in a row!
2071) "Y.M.C.A." by Village People (1978)
2057) "N.Y. State of Mind" by Nas (1994)
2054) "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt

Usually, when one of these lists has so few songs that I like (and really, I've only heard one other on the list) I sort of dismiss the list. But having these three absolutely fabulous songs totally validates today's entry.

2051) "Start!" by The Jam
2050) "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" by Roxy Music
2049) "Calgary" by Bon Iver

2045) "Expecting to Fly" by Buffalo Springfield
2044) "The Way We Get By" by Spoon
2043) "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" by Slade
2042) "WFL (Wrote For Luck)" by Happy Mondays
2041) "Gun Has No Trigger" by Dirty Projectors
2040) "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige

2038) "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen
2037) "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin

2031) "No Woman" by Whitney
2030) "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" by Dusty Springfield
2029) "Les Feuilles mortes" by Yves Montand
2028) "Time" by Pink Floyd

Thoughts:
a) Love it when Randy checks in on the thread (or anybody :)). My goal - to always post at least 2-3 songs he knows (I know this list has such songs)
b) I was interested to hear my 18 yo son (also a tremendous music fan) not too keen on "Time" as a Pink Floyd song. It's perhaps my favorite Floyd song (yes, not too original) but he claims he hears it "all the time" on classic rock radio (which is true). When I was his age, I really felt the same way about "Comfortably Numb" which I heard "all the time" on the radio. Sometimes the songs we first hear can make a difference. In high school, didn't appreciate The Who because songs like Baba O'Reilly didn't appeal to me at the time. Then in freshman year in college, a senior hearing this opinion gave me his copy of Who's Next and urged me to listen further. First song "Baba O'Reilly" - been there, done that. But song #2 "Bargain" grabbed a hold of me - a Who fan ever since.
c) "Expecting to Fly" is one of Neil Young's prettiest songs
d) Roxy's "In Every Dream Home..." always makes me laugh especially the brash guitar solo after the line "I blew up your body...but you blew my mind". I've often envisioned a playlist about inflatable lovers but can only think of this one and The Police's "Be My Girl (Sally)"
e) was delighted to her Jack White in concer to "My Doorbell" a few months ago - fun song live
f) "No Quarter" - just love the creepy, mystical vibe this one has
g) Not gonna argue too much about "Hungry Heart" down here but as a Bruce fan, seems just too low. It does crack me up when the crowd sings along at concert to this song about abandoning one's family.
h) Dusty Springfield = Perfection

How about one more:
2027) "The Final Countdown" by Europe (1986)
2026) "U Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Heden (1999)
2025) "Controversy" by Prince (1981)
2024) "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson (1987)
2023) "Best to You" by Blood Orange (2016)
2022) "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan (1968)

2018) "Et moi, et moi, et moi" by Jacques Dutronc (1966)
2017) "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" by Beastie Boys (1986)
2016) "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane (1960)
2015) "Cloudbusting" by Kate Bush (1985)
2014) "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" by Dr. John (1968)
2013) "A Certain Romance" by Arctic Monkeys (2006)
2012) "Femme Fatale" by The Velvet Underground & Nico (1966)
2011) "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" by Country Joe & The Fish (1965)
2010) "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies (1969)
2009) "Shop Around" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (1960)
2008) "Lotus Flower" by Radiohead (2011)
2007) "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire (1979)
2006) "1/1" by Brian Eno (1978)
2005) "Cupid" by Sam Cooke (1961)
2004) "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements (1987)
2003) "Wake Up Everybody" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (1975)
2002) "The Choice is Yours (Revisited)" by Black Sheep (1991)

2000) "Witness (One Hope)" by Roots Manuva (2001)
1999) "Down Under" by Men at Work (1981)

Lengthy last list of the day but how could I not post it - 1999 baby (now I gotta party like it)! Brian Eno's endlessly long "1/1" might prevent me from actually finishing this list but it'll be done by next time I check in anyway.

Obviously from the great songs on this list alone, we're in for some fantastic numbers in the next 2000. "Boogie Wonderland", "Shop Around", "Cupid", "Alex Chilton", "Giant Steps". Love all of these and would probably put them higher in a personal list (and "Shop Around" and "Cupid" are giants in the soul genre so very surprised by these being in the 2000s).

"The Final Countdown"...sigh...I guess. I will say it makes me laugh every time I hear it given Will Arnett in Arrested Development

Some nice inclusions here - I don't break Prince's "Controversy" out as often as I should, but it's pretty sweet. And if I were composing a list, would have forgotten the "Fish Cheer" entirely but it's such a great encapsulation of the 60s hippie era. "Smooth Criminal" is great badass Michael Jackson, and love Dr. John and Peter Tosh here too.

So....on to the 1900s

Not as crazy about this subsection of the list with which I'm familiar. Maybe I should be more excited about it. "Stand" is very good. The Eric B and Blige songs are right in my wheelhouse. And one of my current big regrets is that I don't listen to enough Doobie Brothers and Allman Brothers.

Okay, I'm not as crazy about this list as the previous one, but this one has four very nifty songs.

Best list for me in a might long time!

Yeah, some of these probably should have been higher but if I worried about that every time out, I'd go bonkers.

It seems like nearly every song (that I've heard) holds special meaning for me. From placing "Smooth Criminal" higher on MJ's list of songs than nearly any other MJ fan, to being mesmerized by MaW's "Down Under", to "Giant Steps" being one of the first Coltrane songs that I connected with and loved (but not THE first,) to a fantastic EWF song, to ... to ... well, every song I listed above means something special to me.

Great grouping!

Here I go again :(

Though the next Acclaimed Music song list was supposed to have its next update next year, there was a "surprise" update (at least I didn't know about it). So the songs have been jiggled about a bit.

So gonna start at the 1999 song again, but obviously (like when this happened last time) there will be some songs that go up and some going down.

Only good thing is that my goal still remains to finish this list this calendar year, and I can't imagine them doing another list this year.

Still...:thumbsdown::( (+ crying emoji)

Only good thing is that my goal still remains to finish this list this calendar year, and I can't imagine them doing another list this year.

Still...:thumbsdown::( (+ crying emoji)

Thoughts:
a) a couple of repeats as above though without looking I find it tough to remember (oh dear!) - "Tighten Up" was lower down. It's movement makes sense as it's a newer song but surprised "Black Betty" a song from the 70s gained spots. My 18 year old, interestingly, really likes that song...a fact that I find even more interesting by the fact that I don't even remember that song from the 70s hearing only in my 40s on satellite 70s radio.
b) I'm sure Dylan's original "Blowin' In the Wind" will score higher but it begs the questions, should Peter, Paul & Mary's version be higher than Dylan - it was the more popular version and helped introduce a ton of people to Dylan
c) Back to 70s songs, like "Black Betty", I don't remember Rickie Lee Jones; entry at all from the 70s. It's vaguely familiar but I'm not 100% I've ever heard it before now (and really am surprised it makes this list at all)
d) my son is a big Kanye fan and recently got My Big Dark Twisted Fantasy on vinyl and has been playing it until the grooves are thinning. I really like "All of the Lights" and tend to think it belongs a bit better-ranked (though Kanye, I'm sure will have many many more songs). Always liked the production on that one though it seems to waste to have all these big stars (Fergie, Elton John, Alicia Keys) for "additional vocals" and not be able to differentiate them
e) George Harrison's "What Is Life" - great song!

1932) "All I Wanna Do" by Sheryl Crow (1993)
1931) "Twist and Shout" by Isley Brothers (1962)

Making some progress today
a) Love the Shuggie Otis inclusion - some great early 70s soul right there. Used to use this song for my morning alarm
b) I haven't listened to that Girls album in years (back in the day it made my 2011 top ten album list). "Vomit" is a really good dream pop songs
c) Can't help but dance to "Uptown Funk" - oops I'm at work! Got an image of a lame guy to uphold. Better not
d) Interesting, right as we approached 2000, Joni Mitchell's version of "Woodstock" and on the new list it dropped a bit to #2140, but here's CSN&Y's version
e) Big Nick Cave fan but must admit I never got around to listening to 2011's Push the Sky Away. Really enjoyed "Jubilee Street" so clearly I need to remember to check it out
f) Have mixed feelings about "We Are The World" - appreciate the effort and it is pretty cool getting all those artists/egos together but even when it was released, felt "Do They Know It's Christmas" was a far better effort. Plus some of the solos can be jokingly imitated (e.g. Willie Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, and...yes, Bruce). And yet, my 80s nostalgia kicked in and found me singing along and almost hitting replay. Don't have an issue with it here
g) Biggest injustices - again, we're getting into rarefied air soon where tons of deserving songs will appear but "Twist and Shout" and "Mustang Sally" are some pretty iconic songs to see them so close to 2000.

1920) "I Wonder Why" by Dion & The Belmonts (1958)
1919) "Takin' Care of Business" by Bachman Turner Overdrive (1973)
1918) "Call Me (Come Back Home)" by Al Green (1973)

1901) "Daddy's Gone" by Glasvegas (2007)
1900) "Moonlight Mile" by The Rolling Stones (1971)

Thoughts:
a) Songs that require sudden volume changes at work have been mentioned before - "French Kiss" required some quick volume adjustment given the orgasmic moaning that popped up mid-song over the electronic dance beats. It was worse than "Love to Love You Baby"
b) If I had to name my least favorite frequent airplay, "classic rock" song, "Takin' Care of Business" would be right there at the top. Not sure what about it rubs me the wrong way but I have never enjoyed it
c) Man, two Alabama Shakes entries in 16 entries
d) Like or hate the Eagles (I like them), "Take It Easy" is their most enduring songs (sorry Hotel California), a tight embodiment of 70s countrified rock - should be better ranked
e) I think every time the list gets re-ranked I play the same Foo Fighters songs again - it's like a Sisyphean penance. Now you see why I'm revving up my listening. Knocked out 100 songs in 2 days (granted I'll be on vacation for a week soon so might not listen to much then).
f) Love "Moonlight Mile" and "And Your Bird Can Sing"! Really a nice day of listening overall
