4869) "Every Little Bit Hurts" by Brenda Holloway (1964)

Thoughts:
1) one day I shall commit time to learning the full poetic lyrics of "Baby Got Back"...as goofy as it is, this song entertains, makes me smile and probably belongs higher
2) Trivia about Brenda Holloway: she cowrote Blood, Sweat & Tears hit "You Make Me So Very Happy". "Every Little Bit Hurts" is a tremendous early Motown classic - love it and love the Clash's cover of the song (worth a listen if you've never heard it)
3) "Angel" was a top 20 hit for Aretha that never gets radio play today, and that's a damn shame
4) Franz Ferdinand and Nick Cave are two artists I have the folks at Music Gourmets to thank for introducing me too. Cave especially has become a favorite of mine in recent years.
5) The J.J. Cale original of "Cocaine" might actually appear higher up (Clapton's version is the hit, but personally I like Cale's version better). I don't think the Kinks original of "Stop Your Sobbing" will show up higher in the list but still darn good.
6) Though Clyde McPhatter would essentially have about 5 years of R& B success after leaving the Drifters (he would continue to record until his death at 39 in 1972 after years of battling alcohol and depression), his early solo stuff is filled with wonderful-sounding material. Great voice! I expect him to have one or two more on the list ("Treasure of Love"' has GOT to be there)

Great thread! Just a few to comment on. "Showdown" is one of my favorite ELO songs. About time they get in the Rock n Roll hall of fame!
There's an awesome version of "Baby Got Back" by Jonathan Colton. His own songs are pretty good, too!
I'm not ashamed to say my introduction to "A Lover's Question" was through Sha Na Na...they were my first concert in '72. Opening band was Little Feat! :)

My goodness! This project has been neglected - more about that on a Random Music post, but glad to rev things up again.
Thoughts:
a) Whether I enjoy or don't enjoy the different songs, having Myley Cyrus, Bob Mould, Tina Turner, and Muddy Waters on consecutive tracks is my kind of party
b) Big pop songs definitely a part of this list as a whole, but, if "Wrecking Ball" is here, Myley's "Party in the USA" has gotta be here? (he asks to utter silence)
c) Speaking of female singers, I kind of which our old buddy Sidey would post here (as he did on FB) about his recent lack of tolerance for the female voice in music
d) And speaking of voices, Ethel Merman! "I Got Rhythm" taking all things historically should be higher
e) and personally I'd like Dusty's pop-classic higher
f) I can only now listen to Erasure. My college roommate (who did not listen to much) fell in love with Erasure in college and would play the cassette non...stop...ugh. In retrospect, he was probably getting me back for all the Clash, Ramones, and Elvis Costello that I played.
g) though many might find Paul's "Silly Love Songs" too treacly (very much a pop song of the second half of the 70s), I find its simplicity charming
h) introduced to many world music/foreign language songs I'd never heard on this list
i) "Ride Captain Ride" continues the list's tradition of including 70s one hit wonders
j) Always glad to see some crossover jazz songs on the list. Error Garner - incredible pianist who will definitely appear in my jazz thread
k) Finishing off with the dopey but addictive funk number by JB from the Rocky IV soundtrack:cool:

Busy day so not many thoughts, but will say that this was truly an "electric" playlist with songs by Prefab Sprout, Capt. Beefheart, and Spiritualized all with electric/electricity in the titles.
Oh yeah. Though I'm sure many might know, the Williamson blues song "Eyesight of the Blind" is the original that the Who adapted for Tommy.

And that Fuck Buttons track is on the album "Tarot Sport", which I added to the Nickyboy's CDs A-Z thread and the associated Spotify playlist this morning if anyone wants to hear the whole album.

Good to see Abba, Prefab Sprout, and the Jam on the list!

Brief thought:
a) Been binge watching Silicon Valley lately, so when Sade came up, I couldn't help recall (and laugh again) at this quote from T.J.Miller's Ehrlich on seduction:
Just maintain eye contact, light some scented candles and throw on some Sade — the early stuff, though, before her arrangements got too baroque
b) "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" is one of the great protest songs ever and has been covered countless times - it deserves a better ranking
3) aside from that, several great songs here, but I don't mind their rankings
4) I'm always amazed listening today that Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood work, but damn it, they sure do
5) So the song from O Brother Where Are Thou makes it - I'll leave it to bluegrass/roots fans like Sam to comment, but...meh
6) When my folks first got cable when I was a kid, one of the movies HBO had (and played countless times) was Rock n Roll High School, which was my first exposure to the Ramones interestingly enough. An odd beginning (11 year old me didn't quite know what to make of them especially in that film) for a group that, since college, I turn to regularly
7) I have always been less enamored with Paul Simon's Graceland than others, but I did think his "Boy in the Bubble" is a good 'un

I'm only one list behind my actually Acclaimed Music 6000 Songs listening - not much to post, but this list especially was quite familiar. I suspect many will recognize a lot of these songs (or at least certainly the artists). Not that there aren't some different choices her - not sure about U2's "Discotheque". A number of covers including "The Man Who Sold the World" and "La Bamba" are here too. And hey! The Monster Mash!
At the end I wonder who will have the most entries on the list - here's Elvis on two lists in a row, though I still guess the Beatles will finish with more.
Trivia: Mariah's "We Belong Together" is the second longest running #1 song in US history at 14 weeks. Guess what's first?
Carey again with Boyz 2 Men with "One Sweet Day" (1995) at 16 weeks

Well, with my Springsteen series closing up, gonna put some added effort now into my Acclaimed Music Top 6000 song series (here covering the Top 5000). Finally caught up in my posting.
Some good 'uns here (as always). Coincidentally "All My Loving" off my recent 1963 With The Beatles pick is here. Never particularly liked the Black Crowes cover of "Hard to Handle", but man! "Presence of the Lord", "Express Yourself", Blondie's cover of "The Tide is High", and "Pork and Beans" are all appreciated here. Randy Newman, Bo Diddley, and Television's entries are all pretty iconic as well.
As far as pop diva contributions to this list, Rihanna's "Only Girl" is actually a song I enjoy quite a lot.
On the other hand, "A World Without Love" - will all respect to Lennon & McCartney who wrote the song, always thought the Peter & Gordon number was pretty meh.

Gotta post shorter lists - just too long typing out 35 songs at a time

- It's always fun listening to this series in the car with my wife or sons who will hear a song they know well from artists like The Beatles, Michael Jackson, or Def Leppard then hear a song like"Hi Freaks" by Tocotronic. The supposed injustices of such a ranking list always gets expressed when unfamiliar songs are juxtaposed with known faves.
- Didn't know this Jeff Buckley song (aside from Grace, I don't know his work that well) but enjoyed it.
- Good to see "I Will Follow Him" up here
- So, "Ghetto Superstar" ranked higher than the song it samples "Islands in the Stream"
- Got a kick out of hearing Bob Hope's "Thanks for the Memory". Made me remember all his specials and how he'd change the words to include the guest stars of the night
- Well, it was bound to happen - one of my favorite Springsteen songs "The Promised Land" down in the netherworld of 4500s :( Ah well, I'm sure Bruce will have lots more

Thoughts
a) Lots of (I feel) well known songs today, ones that I really enjoy. I'm not sure I disagree with their placement down in the 4600s (there's going to be lots of good'un's I imagine higher up) but definitely some songs I don't switch off when they pop up on the radio
b) then again, some still surprise me - "Burning Love" by The King is a pop gem (and his last last top 10). Let me also put a defense in for a group that's not one of my personal faves, Radiohead. "The National Anthem" off Kid A is a tremendous jazzy workout and should be higher. Love that one
c) I'm fine with "Watching the Wheels" by Lennon being here, but gotta say - what a breezy pop number. Always puts a smile on my face. Ditto Chicago's "Saturday in the Park"
d) a later Springsteen number here "41 Shots (American Skin" which Mary J. Blige (with Kendrick Lamar) later covered. Inspired by the police shooting of Amadou Diallo in NYC, it really is IMO a pretty powerful protest song (and one that didn't make Bruce too many NYPD buddies when he first started playing it live in 1999)
e) Had never heard Uffie's "Pop the Glock" and from the title, was expecting a gangsta rap song then was surprised when a synth pop number came on
f) I haven't been keeping individual counts and expect artists like The Beatles or Dylan to finish with the most on this chart, but French chanson-writer/singer Georges Brassens has appeared quite a number of times so far
g) I love Chuck Jackson's subdued R&B song (a Burt Bacharach original) "Any Day Now" - it only hit #23 on the Hot 100 in 1962 but Jackson sings it so perfectly. Again, a song that makes me smile (and sing along) anytime it comes up on the radio (Elvis, Luther Vandross and Ronnie Milsap covered the song as well - Milsap outcharted Jackson)

4608) "Angel From Montgomery" by Bonnie Raitt (1974)
4607) "Collapsing At Your Doorstep" by Air France (2008)

4604) "Times Like These" by Foo Fighters (2002)
4603) "Panama" by Van Halen (1984)
4602) "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)" by Wham! (1982)
4601) "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes (1992)
4600) "Via Chicago" by Wilco (1999)
4599) "Torn and Frayed" by The Rolling Stones (1972)

4590) "Superthug" by Noreaga (1998)
4589) "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" by The Adverts (1977)
4588) "Finally" by Kings of Tomorrow feat. Julie McKnight (2001)
4587) "Your Cover's Blown" by Belle & Sebastian (2004)
4586) "Inside Out" by Spoon (2014)
4585) "Just Be Good To Me" by SOS Band (1983)
4584) "Be My Baby" by Vanessa Paradis (1992)

4581) "Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out" by Bentley Rhythm Ace (1997)
4580) "Mona" by Bo Diddley (1957)

Thoughts:
a) I've gotten through 1500 songs (almost) and I was proud of that feat until my wife asked me what number song I was on - "That's it! You'll never finish"...I have been doing this too slowly - would like to pick up and have some flow to this series
b) Good list with some nice surprises: love the Smithereens and remember fondly "Behind A Wall of Sleep" in high school Also great punk classic "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" about a person receiving an eye donation only to find out they were from murdered Gary Gilmore.
c) So used to hearing Billy Idol's solo hit "Dancing with Myself", I haven't played his original with Generation X (yes, it's labeled correctly in the list above, the single was after the band rebranded themselves as Gen X)
d) I had never heard the early Wham! number "Wham Rap!" and thank goodness for that. Although a top ten in the UK (not released in the USA), it's awful - well, it does essential lift a cool Chic-style guitar riff, but George should not have tried rapping
e) Not typically a Belle & Sebastian fan but enjoyed "Your Cover's Blown"
f) Elastica! Gone but not forgotten. Never had the traction here in the US c/w Britpop stars Oasis and Blur, but their 1995 debut (number 1 in the UK) is fantastic
g) Trivia you know but don't care about: 4 Non Blondes hit "What's Up?" never has "What's Up" in the lyrics. They repeat "What's Going On" but chose the title to avoid confusion with "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye (released 22 years earlier) which was never gonna happen
h) "Ridin" - pretty good pop/rap song but it's true legacy is being the basis of Weird Al's "White and Nerdy"
i) I'd put "The World is a Ghetto" higher
j) "Foggy Notion" - nice inclusion from the odds and sods comp VU which was released in the 1980s and was actually the first exposure to the Velvets for many. Today with their original albums so easily accessible, I almost forget about VU
k) I'm not sure if I would have ever though of including the original "Suicide is Painless" from the film MASH (with Lyrics!) - fun hearing it here though the TV instrumental theme has become so iconic in my mind, I actually prefer it

Whew! Lots of comments - must have been a fun 29 songs!
Encourage others to weigh in too!:)

4549) "Stay In My Corner" by The Dells (1968)
4548) "Chase" by Giorgio Morodor (1978)

Thoughts:
a) Depeche Mode's cover of "Route 66" - eh? Just so-so. Can I assume Nat King Cole and the Stones versions will be higher....will wait and see
b) Sigh..."Macarena"...well it was 14 weeks at number 1...so there's that
c) "It's My Life" was my sign-off song when I DJ'd for my college stadium. At the time, not a very adventurous show as my love/knowledge of music was still growing. I'd like to think I'd have a broader playlist now if I were a DJ (still I do lean heavily even today on old faves rather than new stuff so possibly not)
d) "Past, Present & Future" is a lesser known song by the girl group The Shangi-La's. It has such a chilly atmospheric vibe with the slow delivery of lines like "Take a walk along the beach tonight? I'd love to, But don't try to touch me, don't try to touch me. Cos that will never happen again". It's weird but in a good way
e) "Man in the Long Black Coat" - great Dylan song from the 1989 album Oh Mercy
f) Every time I hear "Chattanooga Choo Choo" I always think of this bad joke/pun from when I was a kid involving a cat stealing Roy Rogers boots (punchline "Pardon me, Roy, is that that cat that stole your new shoes" is really bad but impossible to forget)
g) before this list I had never heard of R.Kelly's (whose name I cannot invoke without thinking of Chris Rock's R. Kelly routine) R&B opera Trapped in the Closet released over chapters between 2005 to 2012. It's so bad it's good - the singing/lyrics are so corny but the convoluted story of a man caught having an affair then catching his wife in an affair is strangely gripping. It's hard to turn off , and I didn't over the 15 minutes of chapters 1-5 (there are 33 chapters as a whole)
h) "I'm a Boy" - still makes me laugh with the Who's trademark humor (which has always endeared their music to me over, say, Led Zeppelin). I'm still not sure whether the gender bending aspect is meant to just be jokey, but I think it can also be read as sympathetic to the challenges a youth with sexual identity questions (perhaps I'm just coloring it too much with 21st century sensibilities). Anyway, I've always liked this single.

f) Every time I hear "Chattanooga Choo Choo" I always think of this bad joke/pun from when I was a kid involving a cat stealing Roy Rogers boots (punchline "Pardon me, Roy, is that the cat who chewed your new shoes" is really bad but impossible to forget).

Hmm... apparently not entirely impossible to forget.

"Don't Bring Me Down" by The Pretty Things is a digable tune. I give it a 75. I can bug out to it.

"But I Do" by Clarence "Frogman" Henry. I had forgotten he did this. In fact, the only thing I remember by him is, "Ain't Got No Home."

"Man in the Long Black Coat" by Bob Dylan. Nice song; I think the version I remember was after he lost his voice. I call it the Satanic version.

"Chase" by Giorgio Moroder. That was from Flashdance, IIRC. An instrumental number, but I choose not to listen to it again, voluntarily.
