Acclaimed Music Top 5000 Songs

"Frankenstein" was a bit of a blockbuster in its time.
"Love is All Around": Back in the day, I remember thinking, "Is this really the same group who did 'Wild Thing'?"
The Housemartins have two very good albums: The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death and London 0 Hull 4.
"Daydream": This just put a nice little earworm in me head. I wonder if The Lovin' Spoonful will top this one. Possibly.
You did not eviscerate "Everything I Own." I am disappoint. Then again, most/all Bread fare is thoroughly eviscerated from its inception.
"Hi-Hell Sneakers": You sure about that title? In 1964?

Ya gotta have your Hi-Hell Sneakers when it comes Hell or High Water ;)
Corrected!

Yeah! "Everything I Own" is a bit of a shocker on this list at all. I think the only Bread song I'd allow is "Make It With You" and has enough of a nice vibe to have prompted good covers by Aretha and Dusty Springfield among others.

Whew! Catching up with posting the past week's listens - about 70 songs. Will comment on some tomorrow - feel free to comment yourself. So many familiar songs, many quite good.

Different song, but “Love Is All Around” always makes me think of Mary Tyler Moore. RIP :(

“Harper Valley PTA” was played to death back in the day and became a career albatross for Jeannie C. Riley (no, not the Janine Riley on Hee Haw), obscuring a lot of other fine work. See also Lynn Anderson.

Harry Choates, the pride of Cow Island, Louisiana! Ever been there, @Zeeba Neighba?

Hey there! Already failing miserably at New Years resolutions and we just exited February (haven't lost any weight wither). Broke out a playlist today and wanna get caught up in this

First thing first - missed a song last time

3695) "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats - not my favorite so perhaps missed subconsciously ;)

Not many comments (feel free to add some) for time reasons. Lot of unfamiliar song in the first half
I will say - how great a song titele is "Drinking Wine Spo-De O-Dee" (also Stick McGhee is a pretty dope name) - they don't write song titles the way they used to ;)
"Red Red Wine" was one of 3 songs that the keyboardists played every day at lunch on the low budget cruise my wife and I took on our honeymoon (the other two: "Margaritaville" and "Baby I Love Your Way". Every...day. Same set. I smirk everytime I hear those songs.

Comments:
1) My...Adidas!!
2) Although I enjoy Paula's "Straight Up" and Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart" as pop songs, I'm not sure either really belongs on this list
3)Now "Going Back to Cali" and "Victoria" on the other hand...both sweeeeet and worthy
4) The Tempts here are, I'm sorry, way too low, the unnecessary parenthetical title aside (reminds me of an AV Club list of songs with odd/unnecessary parenthesis - will try to look)
5) Oddly in 7th grade (when I really didn't have very many albums at all) I owned Blondie's Plastic Letters (my aunt bought it for me) - "Denis" was one of my first favorite Blondie songs. Still love Blondie!
6) Good to see Devo's "Mongoloid" here - always enjoyed that one

Thoughts:
1) Well, not doing too well on my New Year's resolution to continue this playlist consistently, but I'm still truckin'
2) As you know, I'm pretty close to Jazz and I spoke to jazz the other day about some of the inclusions on the list. Jazz said, "I suppose we here at Jazz should be delighted (as an oft-forgotten genre) that we get ANY songs on this list. And not that we want to be ungrateful...but...the Koln Concert is a top 100 Jazz piece of all 100+ years of our genre. Quite honestly it's probably a top 50 piece if you throw in historical importance (and folks like Axo who we've always been fond of here at Jazz would put it in the top 5 even above songs like "Oleo" and "St. Thomas", maybe even above "Basin Street Blues" which is a bit extreme but we love Axo). So for the Koln Concert pt I to appear down her around 3600s is a bit insulting. I mean, no one is saying Travis' "Sing" is one of the top rock songs of all times, right? I dunno...I guess we'll just shut up as we always do and take whatever love listeners throw to us these days"
3) Zeeba would like to add about the Koln Concert: mixing 23 minute album-side pieces next to 3 minute songs is a bit jarring to the playlist process
4) Some good songs here: Stevie, REM, Rush, The Jam but, man, a stint of lengthy electronica in the middle (Hardfloor, Todd Terje, Andy Stott) was a drag especially as they're all 7-8 minute long and Stott's dream-electronica (is that a genre?) "Numb" was just dull
5) Random fact: Travis, the Scottish band, was names after the Harry Dean Stanton character in the film Paris, Texas
6) I have not heard Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" since the 1980s and boy did I miss it
7) Song I would place much higher: "Just One Look" by Doris Troy. Great remakes out there by The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt but the original is just wonderful. Runner up: a little surprised The Possum's "Good Year for the Roses" didn't rank better

^ Considering my avowed piano-man-love for KJ, I might deserve it, but don't be puttin' words in my mouth. :boxing:

"Oleo" and "St. Thomas" and "Basin Street Blues" are chestnuts of the genre.

Hey, talk to Jazz, buddy...I'm just relaying what he/she was saying.

I do not look ahead to the next group of songs, so I smiled when "St. Thomas" came up given Axo and my exchange yesterday. Great jazz piece - a sax classic. In fact, a nice little playlist to end my day. I don't enjoy all hip hop but "Hail Mary" is a good song. Love the Supergrass and Thrills entries. Rihanna is my favorite of modern pop singers so enjoyed "SOS" too.
And after "Boulder to Birmingham", may follow this list today with Pieces of the Sky, Emmylou's classic '75 album

I got a call from Country t’other day. Country says “Y’all gotta love those Sons of the Pioneers. ‘Cool Water’ makes me right thirsty, but be sure to drink upstream from the herd.”

Lengthy list as I summarize some listening over the past 3 days (and get past the 3500 mark). Lots of great, familiar songs out there. Are you surprised some didn't appear at a better number?
a) Biggest surprises for me are Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" (especially as it's the title track of one of the first big LPs) but also "Love the One You're With" by Stephen Stills. Isn't the latter more iconic and beloved (and singable) than, say Alannah Myles 90s hit "Black Velvet"?
b) Speaking of Ol' Blue Eyes, I have always loved "Strangers in the Nights" and would have it better on my list
c) One reason I enjoy this list is hitting songs that I honestly would completely forget on a personal list, por ejemplo, "Tara's Theme" from GWTW. Definitely iconic and deserving.
d) "Touch of Grey" - meh. How does that beat The Stones "Bitch" or Ike & Tina's "Fool In Love"or anything by Curtis Mayfield
e) OTOH, "Since I've Been Loving You" is such a fantastic Zep song, one that you never really hear on rock radio.
f) Some early Cat Stevens way back in 1966 - very different from his big stuff 5 yrs later. More quirky chamber pop
g) Husker Du's "Celebrated Summer"

Thoughts? Any of your faves on here?

I must admit to surprise at seeing Romeo Void. “Never Say Never” was a mainstay of the early KROQ but I haven’t heard it in decades.

The two Sinatra songs are an interesting contrast. “Strangers In The Night” was a big hit even on Boss Radio while “Wee Small Hours” never came out on a single at all.

Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel No. 9” (of 13) wasn’t his biggest but did contain one of his most famous couplets:

I said you'll find my name on the tail of my shirt
I'm a Tennessee hustler I don't have to work.

And that’s Louis Armstrong and Lil Hardin Armstrong supplying the genuine jazz background, an early example of interracial recording. Of course it was waxed in L.A., not Atlanta.
