All Things Beatles

I learned something interesting yesterday. Olivia Newton-John had early, country hits with the songs "Let Me Be There" and "If You Love Me". Throughout the songs is a man who sings along with her who has an incredibly deep voice. That man is Mike Sammes, who with his group, the Mike Sammes Singers became very popular in England in the late 1950s and through the 60s and 70s, doing mostly commercial work and as session background singers. And I'll bet there is one piece they performed on and you had no idea. From wiki:

The singers departed from their usual commercial style when they provided backing vocals for the Beatles' song "I Am the Walrus", which required them to do "all sorts of swoops and phonetic noises" and chant the phrases "ho ho ho, he he he, ha ha ha", "oompah, oompah, stick it up your jumper" and "everybody's got one".[6] They also sang on the Beatles' "Good Night",[7] as well as on their last album, Let It Be, at the behest of Phil Spector.

Who knew!

There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

In my life, I love you more

Thanks, Nick. You just answered one question I've wondered about for years (O N-J) and one I never considered.

I just finished Peter Doggett's exhaustive study of The Beatles during and after their breakup. The book is extremely well researched and supplies an amazing amount of detail weaving together the tangled threads of the Fab Four's musical, personal, financial, marital, legal and pharmacological troubles. On the plus side, it supplies a lot of deep background that explains why their solo work turned out as it did. However, overall it was a pretty depressing read. The only real heroes that emerge are Linda McCartney and Olivia Harrison. How sad that these four men who were so beloved by the world showed so little kindness to each other and to themselves. :(
