Music Gourmets Presents 60 Years Of Great Music: 1972

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken?

This double LP set represented both a musical and a cultural phenomenon. The NGDB went to Nashville and rounded up as many of the first generation players as they could, including Roy Acuff, "Mother" Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, and others (but no Bill Monroe). The results were some mighty fine old timey and bluegrass music which bridged the generation gap between long hairs and older folks that The Byrds had unintentionally exacerbated four years earlier.

Realized that the week was up, and I hadn't given my choice. 1973 thread coming soon.
Couldn't leave this on the outside looking in - from the slow intro to "5 Years" to the strings of "Rock and Roll Suicide" with a slew of memorable songs loosely strung together under a trippy, glam space-age framework. I could play this on repeat and never tire of it - probably on my top 10 albums ever (along with Exile on Main Street)...should such a list exist:nunja:

This record owned me in 1972. I wore out no less than 3 vinyl copies by myself. And that doesn't count the 2 or 3 that were stolen from my dorm room. One of those "they shoulda had more success" kinda bands. The rhythm section went on to provide the bottom for the Kinks and Russ Ballard made his own (failed) attempt at solo stardom. Rod Argent reunited with the Zombies (Bluntstone) and this epic band has been largely forgotten. A shame. The 1973 followup, In Deep, was just as good, if not better, than this milestone of an album.

Leave it to Postalboy to throw something/anything on the table at the last possible moment.;)

But, at least he made it before Nick or Rick complained of untimely delivery.

This was one of the two I left behind for Exile. Since it's now HM time, the other was Big Star's #1 Record.

Better Late Than Never II : Son Of Late
Toughest one by far!

Only by a hair did it beat Captain Beyond's "S/T" (whose musicianship is far superior).

Other HMs: "Rio Grande Mud" (Orig. London mix...NOT that horrible WB stinkfest!), "Machine Head", "On The Corner".
