Our Next Musical Venture?

I just felt a great disturbance in the fo... oh, wait, someone must have typed my name with an at-sign in front of it.

Sure, I'm in. Just don't give me a crappy year, like anything from the 1980's to present.

And get off my lawn.

Rotation to Pick the Weekly Album:
1) Zeeba Neighba
2) Axo
3) LP Freak
4) Unsom
5) Ojai

It's Friday and time to randomly generate a year from 1955-2017 for our next album picker, OldUncleToe. On Monday, he will post our next album to listen collectively

OUT’s year will be:

1960

Wow, no foolin’ I was sure his jest about nothing after 1980 had surely jinxed him. But the random number God’s are in his favor.

Remember, selectors should feel free to pick rare albums or well-worn classics, any genre (pop, rock, soul, jazz, electronic) - a favorite of yours that you'd like others to play and discuss.

Looking forward to your choice @Old Uncle Toe
Hey, I did it! :)

Holy cow, jackpot! I almost want to hand the baton to @JazzyRandy because jazz was strong in 1960. But then again so was blues, which is my favorite genre. Coincidentally Bob Newhart's Button Down Mind was released this year. If we weren't limited to music, I'd pick that. As far as music, I have one early thought, but I'm afraid it's an album no one would like but me and I don't want to do that to you all. I'll mull over the choices and post something by Monday. Wish me luck!

Good luck.

1960 would definitely have to be a Jazz album from me. I'd have to avoid the obvious choices that everyone has heard, like Coltrane (Giant Steps) and Mingus (Blues & Roots). And I'd want to skip the "sleepers" that really aren't sleepers to anyone with more than a passing fancy for Jazz, like Hank Mobley (Soul Station) and Tina Brooks (True Blue.)

That leaves me choosing between some still impressive "left overs". The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Cry Tender, Outward Bound, The Big Beat, or Sin & Soul. So many good things to choose from, and I haven't even gotten to Shelley Man And His Men, and others.

I'd probably go with Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame, just because I'm never above a little Hubbard pimpin'. And young Hubbard, while a little rough, was a fire cracker popping explosive player.

But I'm glad I'm not the chosen one for this year. I'd spend a couple days listening to all these just to try to find my choice.

If I was going jazzy with 1960, Mingus’ Blues & Roots would be tough to pass up as it’s so tremendous (I don’t know if I would assume everybody knows it very well) but If I was going deeper cuts I’d probably choose Tina Brooks True Blue or Art Farmer/Benny Golson Meet the Jazztet. Sam Jones’ Soul Society which alternates tracks with Nat Adderley and Blue Mitchell is also a pretty sweet deeper cut

You're right. I'm probably too far into the Jazz beast to know how much non Jazz fans have heard. Before I got into Jazz, I had no idea who or what a "Mingus" was. His great albums seem like obvious choices to me now, but I have to admit most music fans have probably never have listened to more than one Mingus album.

I definitely should have listed Meet The Jazztet among the contenders. I haven't heard Soul Society -- I'll have to check that one out.

One more thing (not to complicate OUT's choice) but I personally wouldn't be against hearing an occasional comedy/alternate genre if the selector involves. Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart would be a great choice (I don't think you're leaning that way) - but could be because I've just finished binging The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

what the hell is going on with the 1986 list on RYM? It's all over the place year-wise.

Yeah, the 1986 list looks okay to me too. Except that six of the top 7 are heavy metal. Were we still doing that in 1986?

Coincidentally, one of my all-time favorite albums is from 1986. (Not heavy metal, btw.)
