Random Food Thoughts

We went to a relatively new Asian restaurant for dinner tonight. It was packed at 5:30 and fifteen minutes after we were seated there was a line to get in. Lucky us. We ordered, and our soups came in a respectable time. Then we waited for our entrees. And waited. And waited. Mine came first, a full half hour after we ordered. I ate part of it and then waited for my wife and my mother's entrees to come. That would be any minute, right?
uh huh.
My mother's entree arrived a full 20 minutes after mine. I could have been finished and home by then. When did my wife's entree arrive? 15 minutes after my mother's. I don't have a good feeling that the place will last if that is their kitchen service. The waitress was charming, and I know the kitchen fuck up isn't her fault. And the food was absolutely delicious. I would go back there again if I could be sure the food would arrive at the same time. She said that they have a private function going on upstairs and that is why they are so behind. Lame excuse. "It isn't normally like this". I would fucking hope not!

I will try them again on a weekday to see if tonight was an anomaly. I hope it was, because the food was fantastic.

At this advanced age, I just made my first successful poached egg in a pan of water (i.e. without a purpose-built egg poaching device). It came out beautifully. And then I realized I hadn't defrosted an english muffin. Oh well, next time.

My next door neighbor doesn't eat off regular plates. She goes to Sam's and buys huge stacks of paper plates and and big boxes of plastic utensils.

I told her that was bad for the environment. She had no reply.

Doubtless all those trash bags piled around her ears prevented her from hearing you,

There is a supermarket chain here in New England that we like a lot. The closest one was about an hour away. They just had a grand opening this morning for their newest location which is about 10 minutes from here. We got there at 7am (opening time) and the store was already full of people shopping. They said that people actually were there at 6am, so they decided to open up then.

Yes. They are nice. And expensive (but still cheaper than Whole Foods).
Looks like the closest one to me would be in Richmond, VA. It looks like a nice store from their site. Market Basket is fantastic because the prices are lower than the other big supermarket chains around here and they have just an amazing selection of foods. Lots and lots of foreign brands, wide variety of seafood with species you rarely see in stores, huge cheese selection, various tropical fruits and veg, etc. They really pay attention to the local immigrant population's wants. We love it.
