Random Food Thoughts

Because Mrs. Ojai and I both worked full time in our office, we wound up eating breakfast out a lot. After we bought a home in West Los Angeles, Junior’s Deli became our regular hang out. It was a huge operation with over 80 employees and a full scale bakery.

By the time we got there, Mr. Saul had passed the business on to his two sons. The food and service were both excellent for many years, although it was clear that the brothers did not get along. Eventually the quality dropped, the restaurant was sold twice and then went out of business. There are more details in Mark’s post from earlier this week.

Over the years, there were three restaurants in the greater Los Angeles area that became part of our lives. We have now survived all three of them.

It's a bummer when when you have to see good places slide downhill and then disappear. Hopefully something new will pop up to take it's place.

The guy found a simple loop hole that Mickey's should have noticed/remedies. Now that they called him out on it (which is lame as shit on their part), he is crying it has caused him "anxiety".
Yeah, maybe call Alina Habba. Get a really "GOOD" lawyer to represent you for your life-altering "damages" you have suffered. Give me a fucking break.

I started looking at gourmet coffee again from a local coffee roaster (Subculture), and the prices are through the roof. They want $18-20 for a 12oz. bag of whole bean coffee.

I thought paying $9 for a bag of Starbucks ground coffee from Walmart or Target was exorbitant, but now it seems much more reasonable. I'll stick with that, even though I hate that Starbucks is so anti-union.

I know some people think they over roast their coffee ("Charbucks"), but I grew up on Cuban moka pot coffee, so their roasts seem fine to me. I know it's mediocre compared to what I can get from a decent roaster, but I'm not paying $20 for a 12oz bag of coffee.

I recently bought this, and it makes great coffee. I was thinking about getting a Technivurm, but with gourmet coffee so expensive, I'll stop right here.
