Random Music Thoughts

We are getting ready with Phase ....what?... on the remodeling of our house. The back ell started as a bed room for us until we put in a second floor in the front section of the house. Since then, the back room has been a bit of a work out room and since my mother's passing, storage for her items we have here.
Now, we are thinking of redoing the back room. In the mountain of storage are my LPs from childhood to after college. I asked my wife what I should do with them while the work is done. She said we are going to get rid of them.

Apropos of nothing, anyone know the name and number of a good divorce lawyer?

Don't do that, she'll get the LPs in the divorce settlement.

I upgraded my cellphone plan because I was tired of not using streaming music when out and about, for fear of running over my data cap. The unlimited plan has Apple Music included, so I am now trying that. <shudder>

Apple has such terrible instincts when it comes to music. For their WWDC 2019 (World Wide Developers' Conference), they had Weezer play. A band that hasn't made good music since their second album, Pinkerton, in 1996.

Having moved into the house about a month ago, I worked in the home office for the first time today. As I set up the small computer speakers I realized -- I bought this place. I'm going to be here a while. I can set up a decent sound system in my office! Maybe I'll even sign up for Tidal!

I had a blissful moment of joy until I remembered all the money I spent on my deposit and then my tax bill, plus money I need to spend for things like blinds and some furniture I need to buy. It was a wonderful moment though.

Apple Music uses adaptive bitrate streaming. In other words, the sound quality of the music is affected by how much bandwidth your connection has, and possibly how busy the CPU of your device is.

During the setup of iCloud Music Library on my Mac (where it scans your local library and matches it with the Apple Music library so it's available for streaming on all your devices. Tracks that Apple Music doesn't have get uploaded to them so they're available to you on other devices.), the sound quality of the music I was streaming was horrible. Like, REALLY horrible. It sounded like a 64kps MP3. I was feeling regret big time.

It's now finished the iCloud Music setup and the quality is much, much better. It is now about the equal to Spotify. Spotify is warmer and smoother, but Apple Music is more detailed.

Edit:

This post explains more about the downsides of adaptive bitrate streaming. They write about video, but it also applies to audio.
