From "Things That Make You Feel Old" report:The iPod debut on this day in 2001.
Sony, Astrell & Kern and FiiO still make DAPs like iPods. Apple still makes the iPod Touch. From "Things That Make You Feel Old" report:
Last week, my youngest kid (13yo) and I were watching kids from her school walk away from school while we sat in the van for a minute before pulling away.e van. One kid, walking alone, put in ear buds, pulled a smallish device out his pocket and plugged in his ear buds.
Daughter: "What was that? It was too small to be a phone."
Me: "Probably an old iPod his parents don't use anymore and they gave to him because they haven't gotten him a phone yet."
Daughter: "What's an iPod?"
Me: "You can listen to music on your phone. When cell phone first came out, we could not. So they created devices that allowed us to put a few albums on and listen to music. iPods were one of those."
Daughter, looking confused: "Y'all couldn't listen to music on your phone??? That's crazy!"
It could be that the lens is dirty. I remember cleaning it on a laptop drive and getting it working again. I don't know if that would work on a desktop drive, if you can get access to the lens.My great re-ripping journey has a blown tire. I made it all the way to the Y-Z border and it appears the optical drive has gone to its great maker in the sky. When I try to rip, the rip speed fluctuates between 0.03 and 0.00, meaning it would take hours to rip one CD. At first I thought it was a problem with a specific disc or two, but it's obvious now that it's a hardware issue. I guess I burned it out. Now it doesn't even read a CD upon entry every time.
The good news is a replacement is very inexpensive, assuming I don't go Blu-Ray. Looks like I can pick up one in the $20-$25 range. For some reason I thought it would cost a lot more.
Then again, I can probably just take one out of one of the two desktops I don't use anymore and install it in my current box. Hmmmm
After your advice, but not yet ready to take the machine apart, I did a very bad job of blowing into the open slot. Predictably, that did not fix the problem. It could be that the lens is dirty.
