Random Music Thoughts

I lived in Cleveland for a year 20 yrs ago and went back last year with my boys - lots to do there and The Rock & Roll HOF is a fun place, a celebration of music. So I do enjoy the picks.
Do younger people even know/listen to Roxy Music or The Zombies anymore - hopefully, someone will say "Never heard of them" but look at the hot model on the album cover (of Roxy Music) and give one of their classics a spin.

Thinking more about the Stevie Nicks choice, and I think I'm minimizing Nicks influence on more modern artists. I remember a Dixie Chicks interview where they cited her as a big influence, and artists like Sheryl Crow and Courtney Love among others have namechecked her as well. Wikipedia lists many other female artists who have named her as an influence. Looking back at the 70s and strong female rock artists that had popularity there's Heart and Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry but not many others (of course folks like Patti Smith but she didn't have the popular crossover). So I can understand why Stevie made the vote.

On the Golic and Wingo broadcast this morning, they could come up with songs for all the inductees with the exception of Roxy Music. When a list of three hits was read, they didn't know a single one of them.

What was surprising to me was that, among the three songs on the list, there was no "Love is the Drug" or "Virginia Plain."

I'm just gratified that you are having second thoughts about Stevie Nicks and her influence on music. I would think that her influence would be more second- or third-tier, well behind forces of nature like Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou, not to mention the more traditional female country artists like Patsy, Tammy, and Dusty. I'm sure I've missed a few, but even putting Stevie in the mix seems a little premature. Sure, "Landslide" is a beautiful song, but you know....

I heard a similar argument on another sports program yesterday, with Tony LaRussa downplaying the proposed induction voting for Harold Baines and saying that, if you are going to push the criteria ever lower, one needs to reconsider Steve Garvey.

Different Halls of Fame, but still...

AV Club's 20 Best Albums of the Year

Not sure we necessarily need a Best of the Year thread - but there may be a few more lists out there to post

Unsurprisingly, I have heard exactly ZERO of these albums - an indication now that I'm 50 of not even trying :(
I like to think instead that 100+ years of recorded music has reached such a critical mass that all my time is spend catching up :)

I've heard two albums on this list (and will check out another). Does that make me twice as cool as you? :p

I've heard two of them...Janelle Monae and Mitski.
