Random Music Thoughts

I agree completely with him that the Foo Fighters make corporate rock and that Kurt would've hated them.
The guy holds the view that everything Kurt did was the best and that Grohl changing is bad. How the hell does he know what Cobain would be doing today if he was alive? He doesn't. His argument is ridiculous. All bands and musicians evolve and change over time. If the Beatles just kept rehashing "She Loves You" we never would have heard "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "A Day in the Life". I guess they sold out too.

Ah the eternal question - what would artists have become/evolved into if they hadn't have "burned out". Would they have "faded away" (to continue to paraphrase Neil) or would they have evolved into something quite different that their prime. Jimi and Jim Morrison, for example, were moving into bluesier styles, for example. Look at groups like the Clash who left three chords behind and got more experimental - not much in Sandinista is similar to their debut, for example. I agree Cobain would probably not sound as generic and "corporate" as Foo Fighters (I think interestingly I enjoy more Nickelback songs than Foo Fighter songs), but he wouldn't sound like Nirvana as we know it either.

The difference is that "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "A Day in the Life" don't suck. I haven't heard any Foo Fighters that wasn't this bland, washed over, polite rock that is designed to get radio play (way back when) or end up on playlists in the streaming era.

Fair enough. But the author's premise seems to me to be "You sold out because you changed, maaaaan! You suck!". That's a ridiculous premise.

I don’t have a dog in this particular fight since I’m not a huge fan of either band. My take is that some artists stop evolving naturally while others are stopped only by death. Would James Dean have become a bloated caricature of himself like Marlon Brando or would he have kept growing like Paul Newman? Damned if I know. Interesting question, though.

My dog couldn't care less, either. I do remember, however, a certain comment after the mighty KC contributed to his own death.

It was along the lines of, "You know who I really feel sorry for? It's those other two, you know, the bassist and the drummer for Nirvana."

Now, I haven't followed Novoselic (doubt I'll start now, plus he always reminded me of a tall Andy Kaufman), but Grohl at least did something with his talents, different if but the same.

I have no need to be right on the internet (again, why start now?), but here I feel there are dynamics at work, internal to each of us. Some move forward; some move sideways, some do something else.

I won't judge others, except for you guys. I really judge you guys.

Nah, I love all y'alls. :judge:

Your Honor, with apologies to Leon Trotsky, you may not be interested in the internet but the internet is interested in you. :nunja:

I like some Nirvana.

I like Foo Fighters better.

But I'm not the world's most astute rock'n'roll fan, so I'm just whistling in the wind.

P.S. I like Eric Clapton. Does that count for anything?

Wait. You ask which Eric Clapton? From which era? It makes a difference?

Dancing if I know!
