Random Music Thoughts

I don't know that jazz is the largest interest here, but peoplehere that like jazz tend to post a lot. Maybe that's why it looks like that. I like jazz a lot too, but it is not my favorite music genre. And as far as contemporary Country music goes, I am not well versed in it, as it isn't a style I really like. When I was a kid, though, I had a Roy Rogers album and kids collection of traditional country/cowboy songs which I loved. Today, every so often a band or performer comes along that catches my ear and then I am surprised to hear it called "Country" music. It's a wider genre than I give it credit. Maybe we should start a "School Me in Country" thread. Let's start with the yodeling cowboys (yes, I do like that style ).

Agree with Nicky. Aside from Randy, I'm not sure any of the rest of us put jazz as their number one listened to genre, but there are a number of folks here who enjoy it
For me, I would say it's my second favorite/listened to genre after rock/pop (pretty broad there). While I certainly don't post every Beatles, Springsteen or even Arctic Monkeys listen, I might be more prone to post a good jazz listen as other may not have played that particular album in awhile (or at all) and it might elicit some interest (e.g. "Wow! Haven't spun that Dexter Gordon album in a long time. Gotta hear it again" vs "Yeah, I guess I could play Physical Graffiti for the umpteenth time, I suppose". That being said I still post old favorites no matter how well tread they are because...well, they're old favorites.

More a "Random Music Website" post ;)
So after 1+ year of Rate Your Music blocking my work network for unclear reasons (at least the IS dept here can't explain it), I accidentally clicked on one of the album covers posted and lo and behold it went to RYM. So now that site works seamlessly.

Unfortunately, over the past week (maybe after I restarted my work computer), I have to do the Google Authorization and log in about 4-5x/day to the MG despite clicking the "remember me" button

I don't know about Google Authorization, but Chrome won't won't auto-log me in to MG either. Chrome does save the user/password so I just have to do two clicks to get in. I checked Chrome settings for cookies and saved data, but couldn't quite figure out the problem. #FirstWorldProblems

It seems like here on the New 'Gourmets jazz seems to be the genre for which the largest number of members share an interest. Is that true?

Just thought about that because lately I've sampled a little more Country music than usual. (Granted, mostly that hybrid Americana/Country.) And except for a little Dwight Yokum on the Great Music of 19xx topics, I don't think I've seen anyone dip their toe in that water.
OUT, jazz seems to have the widest acceptance and drew some new folks over from MusicBoomerang like @Markonomicon and @earcartoons . But @lpfreak1170 enjoys some country too. We're a pretty eclectic bunch.

Eclectic for sure. Just for grins, sometimes I'll sample the previous two or three albums from WAYLTN? It surprises me how often others' choices miss the mark for me. To be fair, I consider that a criticism of my own taste in music more than others. (I try to keep an open mind, but it tends to let the air out.) Maybe that's why I like it when people discuss why they like something. It helps me to know what to listen for, what to appreciate.

Interesting observation...and applies to me as well. However, over time I find that my tastes are becoming more catholic as a direct result of WAYLTN. I’m more likely to pass on something because it is overly familiar than because it is outside my comfort zone.

I'm guilty of that too. Someone posted a Kinks album. I'd never listened to that one but even so, my attitude went "I know what the Kinks sound like. There's other stuff I need to listen to." Which probably relates back to that issue about dealing with the glut of available music.

As a school kid, I played brass instruments.
The spit valve was a fun accessory. Due to a post in WAYLT, it just occurred to me to wonder what kind of valve is on a nose flute.

Interesting article on retiring musicians. Thanks, @Worm!

Their focus seems to be on the physical limitations of age rather than artistic considerations. Does that mean they don’t care if they are still capable of quality performances?

"Randy Newman has summed it up perfectly: 'Musicians keep going. There is nobody applauding at home.'

When the stars step back, it doesn't take them long to discover how much they miss the bright lights and rowdy crowds. 'My job is the greatest job in the world,' Neil Diamond told an L.A. crowd last summer. 'I sing. You hear. You applaud. I sing louder. I go wherever the noise is.'
"

Correct.
