The Concert Thread

Going to see Motown: The Musical this weekend. Not exactly a "concert" per se, but the reviews seem to categorize it as more musical than play.

Yesterday, I picked up three front-row tix to see Jazzman Kamasi Washington and his incredible show in December.

Looking forward to both.

Amazing concert last evening. I met my child Alo, now nearly 30 years old and an MFT intern, before this concert at the Regent Theater.

Mark Kozelek never played an instrument during this performance. Rather, his instrument is his lyrics and his voice.

He came out in a black suit over a black shirt, open at the collar. He never removed the coat. He performed like any singer that you might go see, using occasional hand gestures to guide the band.

He swore but it seemed always to be in good fun. Such as, at the end of one song, in which the guitarist added an extra note at the end: "Ah, Eric; man, you fucked up." Eric just smiled and laughed, as did the audience.

He was backed by the Magik Magik Orchestra and Josh Haden, son of Charlie Haden and founder of the group Spain.

One of the Haden sisters, Rachel, came up on stage and sang "Fragile" with Mark. I frankly teared up during this song.

Unless it goes by a different name, one of his last numbers indicated a conversation with his dad about the current Trump administration.

I picked up a CD at the concert, the 2017 Jesu Sun Kil Moon: 30 Seconds to the Decline of Planet Earth.

I received a free EP: Mark Kozelek Night Talks. It has "Astronomy" on it; one of the many standouts from last night's concert.

Tickets go on sale Friday for Sleep. Pretty pumped for it. @Pops have you seen them? Any tips for a show by them?
I'm a huge Al Cisneros acolyte, but more a fan of OM than Sleep. That being said, you will always get your ticket's worth with Matt Pike. When I was younger, I loved to get there early and hold a spot up front so I could stalk Al when he gave that Rickenbacker a workout. Stunning, up close. Now that I am older and my hearing is shot, I tend to hug the back wall. And these shows locally seem to attract the vaping stoners, which really clouds up the room. The contact high has no appeal to me. Get off my lawn! And enjoy the show. Be prepared for Br'er Pike to tear off his shirt early on, which is a little scary with the gut he is sporting.

Saw Chicago Friday night - would never have thought of seeing them (in fact, passed up seeing them in Vegas, I believe, in the 1990s). Like their hits, admire a couple of early albums, but not a huge fan. Still, they were in town, so I said "What the heck!". Boy was I pleasantly surprised. Though older (the three founding members that still tour with the band are 70, most of others 50s-60s), clearly a band that has a great sense of showmanship and one that has a good chemistry (this is their 51st year of consecutive touring). Plus, they are fun performers especially the brass/woodwinds who are front and center on the stage and jump around the stage, often cutting up and trying to rouse up the crowd.

Good show to be at - they started the tour with the double-album Chicago II in its entirety showing off their musical chops (and reminding me what a fine album it is (bit of progressive elements in there too)). From an audience standpoint though, there were definitely a few people who were wondering "What is this?" (the first recognizable song on Chicago (II) for fans just of the hits isn't until side 2). After a 20 minute intermission, the group came back and played over an hour more of hits - it was a 3 hour show with 20 min. intermission. Apparently this tour, with Chicago II, these are the longest shows the band have ever done.

So a fun surprise, and was delighted to hear Chicago II, as I really enjoy that one.

So in a Chicago mood and gonna be playing a number of albums over the next few days - read an article on original guitarist Terry Kath and how talented he was (Hendrix apparently knew him and was impressed by his playing) and appreciating his work today in playing their early albums.

Edit: two highpoints - "Make Me Smile" during the first half which is really such a kick-ass song. Secondly, during their hits second-half, they played a 10-min version of "I'm A Man", a delightful surprise that showcased the musicians.

Awesome! I saw them a few years ago, only did a couple from their lame 80's output...great show, though only 2 hours.

Great review, Zeeba. I saw Chicago at the Greek in LA on a warm Saturday in September 1972. Somehow I scored front row seats. Took a lady who majored in Classics at UC Irvine with me and worked part time at Disneyland. Julie, I hope you’re happy, wherever you may be. ;)

It was a fantastic, high energy show much as you have described. Terry Kath was a real innovator on guitar, even performing “Free Form Guitar” live. Chicago V had just been released and “Saturday In The Park” had the crowd up and dancing.

One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

This thread was buried. So I had the good (no, GREAT) fortune of seeing Jesus And Mary Chain with NIN last night at my favorite concert venue. F'ing amazing show!!

First: TOBACCO - Had never heard of them. The main guy in it is also from Black Moth Super Rainbow (yeah, don't know them, either). Was expecting nothing but was VERY pleasantly surprised...they were really good! Dark, heavy electronic music with imagery on their screens that will haunt me til the day I die (Pokemon and weird alien porn, anyone?).
Second: Jesus And Mary Chain - OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Simply amazing...needed to play another couple hours...glorious, beautiful noise. William Reid is a monster on that guitar!
Third: NIN - Heavy, intense, dark, heavy, intense, heavy...did I mention they were really heavy? I knew they would be good but had no idea just what I was truly in for. Wish into March Of The Pigs was so brutal...a concert moment (well several minutes rather than just a moment) that I will never forget.
