The Motels - Apocalypso (recorded 1981, released 2011 )

Here's a disc that answers the burning question "why did The Motels wait two years to release their third album?" Short answer: they didn't wait. They recorded Apocalypso but Capitol Records rejected it, saying "too strange, too dark, and where's the single?" So, the following year lead singer Martha Davis kicked her abusive guitarist boyfriend to the curb (served him right :boxing:) and the band rerecorded the same songs in a more commercial vein. The resulting album All Four One proved to be their commercial breakthrough.

Omnivore Recordings gives us the chance to play "what if" by releasing the whole album plus 5 bonus demos and an alternate. Speaking as a devoted fan of X, I'm really sorry The 'Tels didn't released this edgy, guitar-fueled romp. Exene could have used the competition in the quirky dark-haired rocker sweepstakes.

:4.5: on the Sam-O-Meter but not on Spotify .
