Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science - Waiting Game disc 1 of 2 (2019)

I ordered this and the Atmosphere album about a week ago. At the time, Amazon predicted delivery dates near the end of April. Atmosphere arrived today and this one arrived Thursday. Glad to see Amazon is staying ahead of their Corona predictions.
Carrington usually puts together great bands and has good concepts. I usually enjoy her albums, but rarely buy them. Seeing that Aaron Parks (piano and keys) and Matthew Stevens (electric guitar), two of my favorite contemporary musicians, were involved with this one convinced me to buy. I'm glad I did.
The music here reminds me of Robert Glasper's Black Radio albums, with less programming and electronic wizardry. But it has a lot of the same vibe, a heavy influence of Soul music and Hip Hop and Jazz. Like with Glasper's albums, vocals play a significant role here. Only one song on disc 1 is sans vocals.
The curious should be forewarned, this is a very political album. That might be obvious with her band being named "Social Science", but it bears mention that song titles include "Trapped in the American Dream", "Pray the Gay Away", and "No Justice For Political Prisoners." The list of guest vocalists include Meshell Ndegeocello, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Rapsody. Guest musicians include Nicholas Payton, Esperanza Spalding, and others.
I like this a lot on first listen. Like the Glasper, Parks, and Stevens albums over the past decade, this will probably get a lot of play time over the next 12 months. It hits me in all the right places.
