Happy New Year, All!

I decided to start the year with a day of nothing but vinyl.

Now:

Richard Berry - Louie, Louie (Earth Angel 1986)

Earlier this morning:

Eubie Blake - Live Concert (1974)

Darrell McCall - Lily Dale (Columbia Lone Star 1977)

The blockbuster success of Red Headed Stranger gave Willie Nelson enough clout to demand a personal sub-label distributed by Columbia Records. This "Lone Star" imprint enabled him to release boutique projects like this one that would otherwise have been unthinkable on a major label.

Darrell McCall was (and still is) is a fine Texas honky tonk singer with a powerful voice and a flair for sad songs. For this album, co-produced by Darrell and steel guitar legend Buddy Emmons, Darrell was backed by a Western Swing dream team featuring Emmons and former Texas Playboy fiddler Johnny Gimble. Willie even joins on a duet vocal of the title song, an old Bob Wills number.

The singles from Lily Dale got quite a bit of radio airplay but as the title of one song on the album says, "Sad Songs And Waltzes (Aren't Selling This Year"). Nevertheless, this record is one one of the first and finest example of the emerging Western Swing revival that anchored the new traditionalist movement in country music.

Lost my pickup in a cardgame in New Orleans
Lost my girl to a stranger in LA
Left my dreams in a motel in Atlanta
And I've lost my mind somewhere along the way

Can't you see I'm dying on my feet
I'm walking to my grave too stoned to weep
Them old memories that's tearin' up my mind
Are the dreams of a dreamer gone blind

- D.H. "Jug" Brown

:5.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. Cheerful stuff. :worm:

With folks like Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop aboard, it's not surprising that PBB's lidlifter was socko.
I'm not hip to your lingo, Daddio.

Is a lidlifter being socko a good thing, or not?

The phrase "lidlifter was socko" appears to be a combination of two distinct pop culture and product references: the
LidLifter can opener and the character/item known as Mr. Socko or simply Socko.

sock (also socko) — very good (usually refers to box office performance); ” ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ has done socko B.O.” (See also, boff, whammo)

Arto Tuncboyaciyan & Ara DinkjianOnno (1998)

AI sez:

Arto Tuncboyaciyan's Onno, a collaboration with Ara Dinkjian, is praised for its hypnotic, trance-inducing Armenian folk roots infused with avant-garde spirit, showcasing Tuncboyaciyan's unique voice (often in his own "Artostani" language) and mastery of instruments like the duduk and sazabo, creating a deep, soulful, and often melancholy soundscape that resonates with cultural depth, making it a compelling listen for fans of world music and experimental folk.

^ I would lurve to locate a copy of that ...on the cheap, of course.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Federico Mompou ~ Musica Callada (Marcel Worms, piano)

This is the kind of release where one might wonder what beautiful music was being played in the parlor...

...unless one was actually in their neurologist's office.
