Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique (rec. 1967, rel. 1979)
I was playing this one from the new Mosaic Bobby Hutcherson box and started thinking "wow, this is really avant garde stuff for Herbie and Joe." Bassist Albert "Sparky" Stinson was a new name to me. It turns out that he worked just a dozen sessions before his death of a drug overdose at age 24.

Albert Stinson (1944-1969)
When I dug into the discography, I learned that this was one of the many cutting edge sessions that Blue Note held back because they were too far out for the marketplace. Eventually it came out in Japan on the Blue Note Sekai Hatsutōjō 1800 Series. This collection ran for 23 albums, all released in 1979, presenting materials from the "classic Blue Note" period still unissued at that time (worldwide first release).
