The Harper Brothers - Remembrance: LIVE At The Village Vanguard (1990)
MusicBoomerang Trade Of The Day.
This scorching live set puts you right next to all the hard bopping action. Philip and Winard Harper only released four albums together between 1988 and 1992 before branching off into successful solo careers. Perhaps they felt their work together didn't receive enough respect from jazz critics, who seemed dismissive because they weren't Lee Morgan or Art Blakey. For my money this performance revealed them to be highly creative and not derivative at all.

Still listening to it. The sound quality is pretty good for a 51 year old live recording.

Second thought: I've heard this music (non live versions) so many times that there's not much left in brain neurotransmitters being engaged. I enjoy it, but it's kind of flat. So I'm not the best person to judge how good it is. I would have made a terrible Deadhead.

Kiss - MTV Unplugged (1996)

I'm the last person qualified to review a Kiss album. But, AMG thinks that I'm the right audience for this one:
"After sinking deep into this musical celebration, even the not-so-avid listener will surely know something more about Kiss, a classic rock icon of the '70s roaring back in vibrant and passionate form."
Their last regular album had appeared four years before but recently the group had been doing acoustic performances for the faithful at Kiss Konventions. For their special night on MTV, the current touring group was joined on stage by alumni Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Even I know what a big deal that was. The eager crowd was overjoyed as they worked through a strong set of their best songs, some electric. No makeup, no histrionics, just straight ahead rock and roll. Biggest shock to me: a powerful acoustic cover of the Stones' "2000 Man".

"Established in 1996, the Film Music Archives contains materials that BYU began collecting more than two decades ago. First acquired were the files and recordings of Republic Pictures and Max Steiner, acknowledged founder of modern film music, whose collection documents his more than 300 scores."
Among their projects is a series of original soundtrack recordings, the first of which was dedicated to this classic Hollywood backstage drama. Thanks to the rare source material from Max Steiner's estate, they were able to assemble a comprehensive document that includes not just the music as it appeared on film but extra music that was either replaced or left on the cutting room floor completely. The richly illustrated booklet includes background essays on Steiner and producer David O. Selznick as well as track-by-track notes.
