What Are You Listening To? August 2021

Nikolai Myaskovsky - Symphony No. 27 (Op. 85, 1949)
The Russian Federation Academic Symphony Orchestra, Evgeny Svetlanov - conductor

The final work (I'm passing the 15th Symphony for now) by the man known as "The Father Of Soviet Symphony" was composed after the onset of his final illness. It is reflective, even introspective at times, but never somber. This muscular recording is part of Svetlanov's massive 16 CD Myaskovsky cycle.

Elvis Presley - That's The Way It Is - Special Edition (1970 originally)

Well took my an extra day but finished Woodstock playlist yesterday - some long sets and some long jams. I always forget how bluesy the concert was with artists like Paul Butterfield, Canned Heat, Mountain, Tim Hardin

So yesterday, started this and finished today in honor of August 16, the anniversary of The King's death

A Certain Ratio - Sextet (1982)

A Certain Ratio - Sextet - album cover

So an interesting diversion that may last a day or may last longer. I mentioned I got the digital version of The Encyclopedia of Popular Music and for today's listening I thought I'd pick and album from the first artist then an album by the second listed entry and so on. Again not planning to do this exclusively or completely, but hey giving my some ideas to mix it up re: music listening.

The funk/alternative post-punk Manchester band A Certain Ratio is one I've never played before - the Brit bent of the encyclopedia might give a different perspective. Love the bass licks. Cool album cover too.

A Flock of Seagulls - A Flock of Seagulls (1982)

A Flock of Seagulls - A Flock of Seagulls - album cover

So turn the virtual page after A Tribe Called Quest and see this entry (and yes @axolotl I'm playing catch up not listening to albums in 20 minutes on 72 rpm :P) - I'm not sure why "A Flock" comes after "A Tribe" in this encyclopedia, but I'll just go with it. :)

Robert Casadesus - The Early Recordings I (rec. 1940, rel. 2019)

Gorgeous, melodic readings of some lesser heard piano works by Ravel, with a bit of Mozart thrown in to see if you are paying attention. :D

Part of Sony Classics' elegant 65 disc  Casadesus box, aptly named "Pianist of Elegance".

His wife Gaby performed on this collection, also.
